Never had s problem with shimmy with the ex's GQ or GU, but we only ran 265/75/stock sized tyres too.
I did get the front end on the GU aligned with eccentric bushes in the swivels to increase castor and that stopped the wanders and pulling to the left, which most live axle 4wd's suffer from, including Defenders.

D2's actually don't seem to pull to the left, but their front end geometry is radically different to the RRC/D1/Deefer with more castor and dramatically greater KPI.

It always helps to provide some justification to big statements like this...it would probably help the OP for you to tell them why you think an 80 series is superior to a D2...apart from potential reliability issues which I've already raised.
Always looking for creative new ways to get bogged... :whistling:

76 RR...sold coz fuel was expensive at 70c/l

My old had 2 new stock GQ's and 1 GU and all had the shimmy, no mods no lift stock at tyres.

I get the feeling it is more of a personal choice here aesthetics nothing to do with the dynamics or mechanical reliability ect.
Some say they are boring and no character but some characters still drive them
I get it as i remember when Discos first appeared how boring they were and i used to call them assholes as everyone had one
But as the early Discos have aged they are not as common anymore

The D2 will be cheaper, far more economical in diesel form than diesel 80, more tuneable for engine performance, cheaper parts, better handling, similar offroad ability. I can't give you a precise comparo of space, but I'm 5'11"and have slept in the back of my D2 with rear seats removed and front seats forward. The extra height over an 80 series comes in handy. If a D2 is still kicking around, it's likely that most of the common problems have been sorted...
What about the interior space of the two? Which is bigger?

So you don't like very comfortable and very capable 4WD's that make you feel like you are driving a limo instead of a truck

D2 would have a very similar load space, height and access are very good.
