As for the Toyotas , every bush trip I do my mate comes along in his 200 series V8 diesel cruiser and its good and totally reliable.

His brother wafts along in his Y62 patrol and just eats up the bush.

We also have nicely kitted Prado comes along too , and it does the job well and its good and totally reliable.

I go along in my 2.2 (puma)Ranger and smugly use half the fuel they do.

But you know what? None of us care what the other is driving. We all love going on our bushtrips and the vehicle each of us choose is the best one.

Yep.....years ago I used to camp with a bunch of friends...no two 4WD the same. Non of us gave a ****....just got on with camping, skiing, drinking.

What I don't get is the Aussie love for Toyota's, gotta have a cruiser to be dinki di when considering the japs tried to bomb us several times in ww2 I'm surprised they didn't boycott them. Not why I dislike Toyota but something to think about....

For the record I've owned an FJ75 with 1HZ. Actually really liked it except for 1) lack of AC (in Perth), 2) woeful brakes (was on 35's) 3) gutless up hills and 4) bench seats. Its also the only car our Lab has pooed in. Both the 'crusier and my current 110 Puma are characterised by their respective shortcomings but if I had to choose now I'd go for the Landy. The Landy is also a keeper.

My Dad has a 100 Series Cruiser with a turbo diesel 6 4.2L. Spectacularly good vehicle but a little bland.

In ASPW’s article clearly the Defender out performs the 70 series in every area except ‘reliability’. Yet he can’t admit it. So he calls it a draw.

The 100 series would come closer having four coils, but then the scary fuel economy in a 100 series and the lack of four corner visibility are the big killers for the Tojo IMO.

ASPW has become very Toyota biased in the past few years. I reckon his objectivity has wavered somewhat.

I haven't been around here for a while...........because I bought a 79 Series Toyota.

So far the problems have included -

1. Shuddering clutch...yes a friend has replaced 4 clutches, but I still bought a bl...y Toyota.


2. Noisy injector - the local Toyota stealer had it for two weeks and the diagnosis that came back was...no abnormal engine noise. All injectors within parameters. (Hope you can open the attached file) This is normal for a Toyota 1VD apparently.

3. Throttle position sensor fault - goes in to limp mode and a scan gauge is required to clear. Stealer couldn't find a problem, so I picked it up from them , drove 2 kms and it faulted. I paid for a TPS from another dealer - Toowoomba Toyota - (even though it is still under warranty) fitted it myself and haven't had a problem since.

When I dropped it off the idiot behind the service counter wouldn't listen. I kept telling him it was the TPS, he kept saying, 'so it has no power'. FFS the fool had no idea.

4. 20l per 100k - bloody thirsty.

5. Toyota dealers...although Toowoomba Toyota were brilliant, the local fools are as useless as T... on a Bull. From this you may get the impression I don't like the local Toyota stealers.....you would be correct.

So in about 3 months I will have a very well looked after 79 Series Toyota for sale. Hopefully any potential buyers don't frequent Land Rover forums.

At least I now have an excuse to rebuild the Defender - Ashcroft auto included. Give me the Defender any day. In hindsight I should have bought a late model 130.

*I started working on Land Rovers.
*Up north I worked on Land Cruisers.
*I still work on and prefer Defenders.

I've owned a J75 series Troop Carrier was the second greatest simplest vehicle I ever owned.
I own a Land Rover 110 Perentie and its the greatest simplest vehicle I have ever owned.
I also own a Discovery 2 TD5 and can not see why any normal person would own anything but a Discovery 2.

The 100 Series isn't too bad on fuel but then again I haven't 4x4'd it, only punted it around Tassie a few times. I tend to drive it like a car so a bit heavier on the throttle/brakes (because you can) whereas the Landy is driven with a lot more consideration. No point in thrashing it. The 100 series is bloody big though. The Landy has a feeling of picking your way through a route whereas the 100 Series would be hard to do that in.
