    Number plate location alternatives

    G'day everybody and happy Monday!

I was pulled up yesterday by the boys in blue to be notified the ladder on the rear of my 110 (full length custom job that I acquired with the car) was obscuring my license plate and thus I required a fine and 3 demerits. Thankfully I had my tools with me and was able to remove the ladder on the spot and get away with a caution.

Whilst explaining the law to me (I knew it would catch up to me one day...) he noted the ruling is that you must be able to see the plate from a 20m radius at 45 degrees to the car.

This was fine once the ladder was off however he noted that my spare tyre was obscuring the plate from the rear right and thus I needed an alternative position even once the ladder was off.

Wondering if anyone has some creative examples of moving light and plate to meet the requirements? Ideally I'd like to move it to the spare or somewhere such that I can keep my ladder which is light and sturdy (and not an extra $200).

Called Kaymar hoping they might have a spare wheel mount but they don't have anything.

    Any ideas/photos of custom?

    Much appreciated

    Gus

Mate , it sounds like you have been made an example of.....

How many more defenders would be breaking the law for similar reasons.

Might be a good time for defender owners with custom rear treatment to take a look.

Hate to see anyone being booked for stuff like this.

I'll concede the ladder definitely was covering it (all my mates were betting how long it was till I'd get done) - I'm not too upset about that you can see it in the pic.

The 45 degrees from the right hand side seemed tough though. I had to bite my tongue over the fact that then it would seem all defenders would be in breach of the law... Best not to poke the bear.

It's seeming like right now best option will be a custom plate drilled to defender PCD and square section to a standard light and plate holder off the spare... But of a pain. Been searching for something but yet to come across a defender specific version

They are correct about the ladder....

Previous owner of old defer relocated the number plate and little bracket to the drivers side to solve the issue of the ladder.

Perhaps you could mount the plate to the ladder, it should solve the visibility problem, just be careful not to step on it.

Might be better than having one more task to do when you need your spare off...

    Above the rear washer

Can you get it centrally above the rear window washer? Without a roof rack i dont think its possible, but with the roof rack there you could manage. You would have to take an extension off the number plate light, and fix a new light up there, or 2 lights, one from each end. It’s something I am considering doing to mine. I have a roll cage instead of roof rack, but it should be the same.

I know the OP is not in QLD, but I am...

    A quick Google.

    "Number plate placement Qld
The characters on a number plate must be visible from 20m away at any point within an arc of 45 degrees from the surface of the plate, above or to either side of the vehicle. Plates must also be not more than 1.3m above ground level"

I’d say that would be consistent across the states.

Correct NSW is the same. All the real estate above 1.3m is unusable unfortunately.

Was considering doing it to the ladder it's just finding a place it (and the led light) which as you say won't get ripped off by passing branches or knocked off by careless climbers (already seen my light come off as a result).

Perhaps a sideways mounted light and the top of the plate flush with top of the rung...

    I will have to explore!

Does anyone know the legality of having the plate at 90degrees? Running up side of ladder would be good...

Rijidij would knock a spare wheel plate holder up.
