There are ladders which are shorter and would not cover the number plate.
Could you relocate the number plate to attach to the spare wheel?
I believe it is also possible to get square numberplates.
A s;pare wheel carrier is a good idea and the best ones open with the door.
I have a Mantec.
Rididij is an Australian one.
They also improve visibility out the rear window by moving the wheel sideways, which is a good thing.
This thread has reminded me that I still need to look at mine.
When I purchased the Tanami it had the ladder in front of the plate, 18 odd years later it still has the ladder in front of the plate so I must have been lucky......
Mates have been more surprised that I'm not stopped for the axe on the bonnet.

Yeah I think the Highway patrol cars with their automatic license plate scans must throw an error when they can't read a plate on a car. The guy was following me down the M1 (in his new BMW might I add!) for a bit before he pulled me over so perhaps that's the main reason. I've definitely been followed by many police cars prior to this.
For the record, Murray from Rijidij is sorting me out with a spare wheel plate mount for a very reasonable price.
I'll post pictures when I have it mounted in case anyone else runs into similar issues down the line!
Also have a number of other options for rear end bar work and spare mounts.
If you just cut off the step which is obscuring the plate, would it be legal?
