How many Limited/Special Edition Defenders were there? The 70th would be the last?

Corona times give me opportunity to ponder relatively useless information. So (and to quote LR) "Defender Works V8 70th Edition conversion will be applied to no more than 150 vehicles, each sourced, assembled and meticulously refinished by our specialist teams..."

First, I think it's really nice they are doing this. And if they can get these on the road around the world then why can't they just continue making it for the masses rather than the monstrosity they created? But that's only my take, others and Landrover may have greater wisdom.

To my question: How many limited edition, special edition and the like DEFENDER runs has Land Rover produced?

And here to why the question: I bought a 2006 TD5 Defender not so long ago. Great color and I just assumed a previous owner had de-called it to her/his taste as a 'Limited Edition'. But then it also has a factory bull bar with Warn winch, Safari snorkel (could be after market) and when I search the unusual color there are some around that are also called Limited Edition. Still not sure if it is or not, at least the decal between the wheel arches confuses me and seems not genuine.

Anyway, is there some reference to the limited/special edition Defenders? And aside from that any hints on mine is would be welcomed.

Worldwide? They must have been hundreds, particular the French had many based on 90's.
This is probably the book you really want. Great read! m

The two "Special Editions" that appealed to me were the 50th Anniversary V8, & the 70th Anniv Works V8.
All of the latter I believe were pre sold at around 150,000 pounds, so over $300K Aussie, & I've seen them recently for 175,000+ pounds, so no hope of me owning one,....but what a great Defender it would be.

Like I said, WAY out of my league, BUT if ya had the dollars, registration would not be a problem, maybe not through JLR Aus, but a private import, with an engineering cert, and away ya go....dollars can solve many things!

At the end of the day the Tanami, like a lot of 'specials', was some accessories and a decal pack.
I still have an email somewhere from Rover Australia where the 'Defender Product Manager' thought there were maybe 100-150 Tanami Defenders sold but couldn't confirm. He also couldn't confirm the exact spec !

    Defender Tanami Specification ?
    Tanami Defenders

As mentioned by 100inch there would have been lots of Defender 'specials' across the World.
Some 'official' and some by a particular dealer.

There was a period when LR UK pretty much let the local dealers the freedom to do whatever they wanted as LR UK was busy enough (particular when MOD orders went through). One of the special project stopped by LR HQ was the French idea of a 90 V8, combined with a Dakar entry. m
