TD5 Clutch Slave pushrod problem prevention!

Just about to replace slave after 20 years and master cyl at the same time, (I think I did master many moons ago, as I have recurring nightmares about the rear two bolt removals from the pedal box), so that must be why. So the interweb tells me the slave pushrod, with me being me, will most likely fall into the bell housing when I go to remove the slave creating a lot of mucking about and swearing to retrieve. It then goes on to describe all the ways to sleeve the rod to reinsert the clip etc... etc... Although this all sounds like a real fun time my various personality disorders preclude me from enjoying same. So, I'm thinking along the lines of pulling the slave and leaving the pushrod right where it is and then just bolting the slave back in place, almost like a normal car? So. Is there anyway as I remove the slave with gritted teeth and puckered sphincter that I can ensure the pushrod remains in its rightful place to avoid further financing of my therapists yacht??? Cheers

If you take care when you remove the slave the rod will stay in place.
If you are angry and break the plastic retaining clip on the release fork or if its already broken then its a bit harder to replace the plastic clip after but it can be done.
I think last time i had a small metal tube that went over the rod to keep the plastic clip pushed to the end of the rod where the ball is and then a long thin screwdriver to bend the plastic claws over the end of the release fork all while shining a pencil touch in to see what i was doing, oh and with only two hands and not much room.

I attempted the same job last week on my 2003 Td5 Defender (replace clutch master and slave as master was leaking) only to discover, after I'd removed the slave, that I'd ordered a 110/Perentie slave instead of a Td5 slave. And as I discovered, the Td5 slave has a finer thread on the pipe inlet than the 110/Perentie slave. So the original slave, which fortunately wasn't leaking, had to go back in, with quite some time spent repositioning the pushrod.
I'll "take care" when I get the correct slave and have to repeat the exercise!
