The tyres are an illegal fitment onto those rims.
Did you put them on yourself or did a tyre shop fit them?

The minimum rim width, as stated by the manufacturer themselves is a 7.5 inch rim.

Table showing rim width and fitment specifications is in the link posted below.

Edit, actually reading this thread and a few other ones in the Defender section, you're not the only one with illegal tyre fitment, the fella in the post immediately above this one also has the same tyre specs (but different brand) also on sawtooths... In his case the minimum rim width for the tyre fitment is a 7.5 inch manufacturer recommends an 8 inch width though...

A few of my 90's run much bigger than stock tyre/wheel combinations but are fully engineered and road legal.

    Anyways, enough of my bitching,

I like the looks of your 90LE, looks very similar to mine, although I haven't yet fitted a raised air intake.
Just be careful of the front guards lower corners, they are very exposed by the raised angle of the front bar...
I have a similar tube bar from First Four, and badly crumpled both front guards and headlight surrounds, which was a very expensive fix.
Cheers thanks again for the info. Good to know.

I was looking at these posts again (as one does) and came to the conclusion my previous post could be misconstrued/ misinterpreted as, upon rereading, it looks like I'm calling Mike (90@) a know all. Nothing could be further from the truth - I don't know the man; though, what he says about legalities is absolutely spot on and insurance companies, as we all know, look for any angle to worm their way out of paying up on a claim. In fact, if you look up the RTA/ RMS, Services NSW (or whatever they call themselves this week) website, you'll be disappointed at the minimal amount of modifications you can legally do to any car without engineering. Also, if you have very wide tyres and manage to get them onto narrow rims they're more likely to roll off when you deflate off road. I was all for wheel spacers and fat tyres until I found out they're (spacers) illegal on road and will void your insurance in the event of a claim.
I still stand by my comment about arguing about tyre sizes being like religion and politics - I started a thread once about sizes when driving on sand on Fraser Island - well, didn't that start a few arguments and it left me totally confused as to who was right and wrong.

    cheers Gerald

Hi Didge. I was on Frazer Island in January. When I'm there I travel with my Nephew and a well known Frazer identity. My Puma 110 is fitted with Conti ATs. Bog Standard. Nephew's jacked up Hilux Sr70, big Mts, struggles. Well known identity, J70 Tray Back, Slightly bigger than standard Mts, Recons he would do much better with my tires on his.
Just thought I'd throw that one in.
    Cheers, Billy.
    Keeping it simple is complicated.

Yeah, thats the sort of thing I'd been told. Skinny tyres are pushing less sand in front of them than the fat ones - but I guess that's an discussion for a different thread.

Fat tyres are like bulldozer blades, while skinny tyres are like knives.

Thing is, I was asking about whether my fat tyres 33 x 10.5 R15 were better than the 7.50R16 original Defender tyres and everyone else in the discussion was calling hte 10.5's skinny.

7.5R16s are best on sand IMO, closely followed by 235/85R16. If you could go taller without going wider it would be even better - creating a longer tread (think caterpillar) when aired down, as opposed to a wider tread with more frontal resistance.

It's interesting that LR, for want of a better word, their serious 4wd, the Defender, has stuck with tall and skinny, as opposed to lower profiles.
what other 4wd comes ex factory with 85's

In old photos you see Ford model T's on super skinny hopping over sand dunes without a drama

Does anyone make a 90 profile for 16 inch, it would be a cheap lift
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

The current LC70 Landcruiser workmate wagon comes stock with 7.5R16's.

How many owners leave it like that? Probably not that many, outside primary production and mining companies.

Despite the pros and cons of each, it seems there has definitely been a long term trend towards big fatties, and I guess it's all personal preference at the end of the day.

I have 265/75R16's on Agnes (purchased entirely due to price at the time) and when I wear them out, I'm going back to 235/85R16. I haven't been disappointed with the 265's, I just prefer the skinnier 235's.

Whatever you have, get out there and enjoy them

Ford T as standard had 30x3.5 tyres, but their main advantages offroad were light weight, good weight distribution (most weight on driving wheels) and high ground clearance. But the minimum recommended tyre pressure was 60psi, and dropping below about 40 was asking for trouble.

7.50 x 16 tyres are 100% profile and readily available.
