    Hi Nige,

yea - the roof reticule has an interesting back story. I do a lot of wheeling on the remote dirt roads in the eastern Sierra Nevada, Owens Valley, the Inyo mountains, White mountains and the western sections of Death Valley. There is not a lot of 4 wheelin traffic out there - and I rarely see any vehicles on the trails. The air space above these locations is restricted for use by Navy jet fighter aircraft practicing air combat maneuvers. (dog fighting). (many of the training scenes in the movie "Top Gun" were filmed in this area.) They train during the day and at night. Most of the time they are F-18s flying at 10,000 ft to 30,000 ft. (the Inyo's top out at around 9,000 ft.). Occasionally I can see them pulling air maneuvers - but most of the time you just hear them. (they move pretty fast and you can't see them well because they are grey). When they are done practicing they usually fly back doing low level terrain avoidance. If they see me while I am out there driving they usually make a point to do low level pass right over my truck. Those pilots have a lot of fun -on one occasion I was in a boulder field photographing one of the nearby mountains. I had watched a couple fighters going at it on the other side of the Owens valley. When they were done one bugged out to the south the second dropped down to take a look at my truck. He flew directly above me 300 ' off the ground inverted- then hit his after burners and disappeared into the sky. It was after that encounter that I decided to paint the reticule on my platform to have a little more fun with them. One night I was out in Eureka valley (part of death valley) to make an image of star trails above the Dunes in Eureka valley. it was about 10pm (good and dark). Just after I got my camera set up two jets set up an oval shaped orbit path about 4 miles long & about 5,000' above the ground.. It was pitch black out there so they must have been using targeting sensors to see me. For about 15 minutes they took turns dive bombing my truck. It was a pretty good air show. I use to tell these stories to my wife - but she always seemed diss interested. On one of our trips to the southwest I drove her through Death Valley . We were on a paved road stopped in string of cars 1/2 mile long (due to road construction). I was standing outside the truck scanning the horizon, I saw a couple jet fighters (F 16s) change course and head our direction. They passed right over the truck doing 6 or 7 hundred mph. The engine noise and air turbulence shook the ground and my truck. Everyone jumped out of their cars and were jumping up and down for the personal air show they just received. My wife now listens to me when I share other aircraft encounters with her.

    Brindies Drive

Had the day off today, and a couple of hours to myself for a nice drive through the Brindabellas. Blue Range Road, Two Sticks, Powerline track, Webbs Ridge Road down to Flea Creek and then Gentle Annie back up to Brindabella Road to head home.

It had been raining lightly the whole way, and the climb up Gentle Annie from Flea Creek had the traction control kicking in a few times

At the start of the drive, on Blue Range Road I saw another forum members work rig on the side of the road. Sorry we didn't get to meet.

    Here's a couple of snaps.

I'll be down around Blue Range on Sunday, doing recovery for the National Capital Rally (that's our blue Subaru on the front page)

Hope it drys up a bit by the weekend otherwise we may be busy.

    Cheers,
    Jon

    Hi Jon,

Yep I saw a few rally cars, heading along Brindabella Road on the bitumen (with lots of red mud sprayed up the sides), and a few more on the gravel at the start of my drive. I guessed they were doing some track notes or familiarisation, or something of that sort, prior to the event.

    Looks like fun.

Carzee, thanks for looking over looking over my Photographic portfolio. I understand your frustrations in the darkroom with dust flecks.... When I first started printing I experienced the same issues. To minimize the issue I change the light source in my enlarger to a Diffused light source (an Aristo lamp) it reduced the problems by 99.5 %. But I occasionally still have to "remove" minor dust spots from my prints with a super fine paint brush and spot tone.

I restored and drove a '64 Series II A 5 door 109 station wagon 15 years ago - I kept the spare tire on the bonnet as well. I too would regularly jump up on the spare to get a better vantage for happy snaps. The burmabright alloy on the vintage machines was and still is quite a bit more durable than the aluminum used on modern defenders. I'd never attempt to hop up on the wing or bonnet of my D90!

Parking rules applied at Bunnings today. Sorry for the poor quality & angle, it was raining & didn't want to get the phone too wet.

Found these old fellas having a little rest applying parking rules at the Maleny Show yesterday. Didn't meet the owners, but they are in great condition.

    Thumbs up red defender

I think the red 90 looks great, I bough my red one about 15 years ago, I though it was unusual at the time, I hadn't seen one before but have seen a few since. I've just finished fitting a new Runva 11000 lb winch in place of the old warn xd 9000.
The new winch was $700 delivered I think, and it has a 5 year mechanical and electrical warranty. I pulled it apart to rotate the motor 45 degrees to present the terminals better, It looked good in side on the motor end, and they have a nice big lip seal on the drum, to stop water from going onto the drum end and getting into the brake. ( a weakness of the old xd 9000). The Runva was a little bigger than the xd 9000, so a new top cover was required. I concealed the solenoid panel. (its compact and half the size of the Warns ) It also has addition of wireless control, but thats not wired up yet, it will mount behind the grill.

I fitted a Magnom magnetic oil filter to the gearbox and changed the oil to Penrite progear, the shift feels great when its hot, but I cant get into second gear when it s cold, it takes about 10 K to get warm enough on these cool mornings, its a pain in the traffic, so will have to change the oil again this weekend.
