When BMW bought Land Rover they experimented in South Africa and fitted the 325i engine to the Defender. It was done over there purely because there was a Land Rover factory (Defender flat pack assembly works) at Roslyn, just outside Pretoria. From 1996 onwards you had the choice of a 300Tdi or 2.5i (straight six as Rick wrote) and then from 1998 onwards the Td5. They stopped building them when the plant closed around 2000/ 2001, but I'm not 100% on that year.
They were absolutely lethal for those who like fast Defenders and many a young street racer had his evening spoilt by being left at the traffic lights by a seemingly "docile" 90 speeding off in the distance. Unfortunately the power band was in the wrong rev range to make them really pleasant off road. High revs to get the power and then the resultant wheel spin would dig you in.
Obviously very thirsty as well...
Cheers,
Lou
Fergus and Bluey became friends this weekend. He just loves being in the back of a 'ute':
Now - here's another question.... where's the best place to store a spare wheel in a 110 crewcab in order to get the most volume oout of the tub? Are wheel hangers available that any could recommend? Maybe I could put the wheel up on the roof carryall basket?
I'm gettiing a tow ball soon and because I transport up to three mountain bikes around I was thinking of getting a tow bar fitting Thule bike carrier - the kind the bikes sit on a platform, with integrated taillights etc.

Great pics 29dino!
If you're after a bike carrier you can do worse than iSi Advanced 4x4 Bicycle Carrier and Bike Rack Systems, locally made and extremely awesome. Here is ours in action:

See Rijidij, Murray makes a very good unit which works well. I have one, but I haven't tried the bike rack on it yet, but it looks like it'll be fine.
Cleaned for the easter trip

I have the bikes up on top of the 130, we mated some Swedish carriers to Rhino bars.
The carriers are whatever Rhino imports and sells, when i got mine years ago they'd never mated them with their racks/bars and sent a bunch of hardware but it all went together easily.
[edit] you can just make them out beside the ladders here http://www.aulro.com/afvb/1836028-post1270.html
