2nd, some styles reduce your approach angle.
 
3rd, They reduce airflow under the car. Gearboxes do rely on this cooling effect.
 
4th, Mud can be a problem to clean out depending on design. 
 
Me, I've just opted for a beefier tube bar setup similar to original.

 Quite true - all good points.  I looked into a few different bash plates and chose the OL version as...
- no reduction in approach angle,
- the leading edge and base of the guard are perforated with large diameter holes which allow airflow,
- it's easy to hose out.
