    Defender vs Disco Parts

Is anyone able to give a short version of the drive train equivalence or otherwise of the 300 TDI 110 Defender and a similar year disco?

Axels (incl ratios - different to petrol right?), suspension, Engine, gearbox and transfer case?

Why I ask is that I am looking into buying a 300 TDI around mid 90's age cab chassis/ute set up to use as an off road only vehicle to play hard. So would put larger wheels, some bar work including roll bar, shorten ute tray, add lockers, lift springs (and cab - is that needed?)

My land rover experience is with Disco (drive a 00 D2) and Range Rover (had a 86) and have some parts (diffs, transfer, 3.9, suspension etc) that can use if break the play car.

What are the risks to look out for with a 200K TDI?
Does anyone have a good one for sale at reasonable price?

    Thanks in advance

differance?? yes the defender will have a salsbury rear diff and no rota flex coupling.....and the t/case will have a differant hi ratio. yes springs will be differant rates, their differant cars.

basically 98% of the parts you have will fit the defer.

    cheers phil

Ok basically the same things on a 300 Defender and 300 Disco

    • front axel the same
    • Front prop the same
    • Engine the same and the crap around , apart from the Alternator should be 100 amp on disco and 65amp on defender. But they are still intercahangeable, and have differant airboxes
    • If manual both have the R380 box , But tranfer box will have differant ratios
    • Rims changable
Few more but that is basically the same

Further to what Phil has said, the gearbox shifter housing on top of the 'box is different between the Disco and Defer.
V8 R380 gearbox ratios are different to the diesels.
Rear springs are a bigger diameter.

    Thanks thus far Guys

I have read that the Disco transfer case has higher hi ratio and same low ratio - so may keep my spare box from the 3.9 - as was rebuilt tempted to get lower low range is the disco box then install in the defender when get it

I have a ARB locker from a mid 90's PETROL disco - from what you are saying will go straight into the Defender front diff - not rear as the rear is different? Also presume ratios for oiler and 3.9 powered rovers the same?

If I break the rear diff will a disco diffs bolt in as replacements (with flex coupling changed for rear the only mod?)

Anyone with a defender cab chassis 110 for sale?

The only difference between R380 V8 ratios and 300TDi R380 ratios is that first gear is higher and the rest of the ratios are the same.

You wont be breaking the rear diff, although the stock axles aren't much chop.
You can easily chop 3/4"off the bottom of the Sals too so it's not so much of a plough, and take a stack more off if you are willing to cut and weld the bottom of the housing.

The chart I have shows that 5th is a touch shorter on the diesel box too.

same ratios 3.54. disco diff's are rover type the rear defer one is sailsbury, totally different to the rover type.

If I break the rear diff will a disco diffs bolt in as replacements (with flex coupling changed for rear the only mod?) yes i think? but you dont want to do that, in rover terms its like swapping a 9'' for a holden banjo
