Over head console on a ute?

    G'day!

I would like to make up/put in a over head console in my defender ute. So i can put in a CD player and one day a UHF radio etc...

The problem i think is the roof lining. The frame thing for the roof lining takes up a lot of space and to get the console up above the metal thing up above where the door closes i would have to cut out the lining?

So is it worth taking out the lining and putting in carpet or some thing? And maybe covering the ply in the same carpet?

Some thing else i was wondering is where to put speakers? I would like to have them on the console but where they would go is where the sun visors are. So in the top rear coners of the roof?

    Thanks!
    Ben

You could just put in a console down the centre instead of across the windscreen, then put your speakers and stero and uhf in that. doi make heaps of centre ones for defenders

Yeah i really like that one you made Larry! But the problem is i have a ute with three seats in it that do ocasionaly use to carry three people in and having one in the middle with a mid sized person would make any trip not very comfortable.

What type of carpet etc would people recomend for the roof?

    Thanks for your replies!

    Cheers

Here's some info from when I re did my roof lining

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130...-lining-2.html

I have these mounted on the cargo barrier behind my head, I reckon with a bit of fiddeling something could be made up for a ute, either that or maybe behind the seats?

Have you thought about a console like this instead?

If you want to fit a CD player won't it just slot into where the radio is mounted?

    Just some ideas

Thanks Jock The rock... I have looked at the centre console thing but i dont think it's my type of thing. There isn't any radio in it so i thought when i put one in i might as well put it where it suits me the most.

I think i would like it on a over head console so it's out of harms way if i should ever go through deep water. Same as if its raining and windows are down etc its out of the way

Maybe i should go to a upholstery place and ask them about putting carpet on the roof...

    Cheers

ive just put a center roof console in my 110 ute. it works a treat. the cd in the front and uhf in the rear. from the original height of the roof ive only come down about 10 cm but ive taken the middle seat out, ready to make a cubby with inverter and maybe the can cooler. will post some pics soon of what ive done.
when i was working out how to make up the console i thought about going across the front above the sun visors and it would work but would need to cut the lining out a bit. if you take the lining out youll get a shock how much more room there is!
