    .50 Cal machine gun

Took my SVX to the dealer with rattling clutch and engine rattlle when starting cold last week. They replaced the clutch with a modified unit from the U.K. The 50 cal engine noise that was backed up by a yellow light and loss off power was put down to a fuel metering valve. I know others have had hell with this noise. Maybe worth a look. By the way new clutch is awsum. My SVX is now the vehicle I thought I was getting in October last year. Stick with it, (stiff upper lip) you will eventualy end up with a good 4x4 or if your really unlucky and your dealer is crap you may end up in psychiatric care (stiff upper lip may not hold up.) Jokes aside, why does this product have so many faults? This vehicle just needs quality control. Why cant they get it right after 60 years of practice. I know all the arguments, its a Defender, this is what they are like, ect....... The poms eventualy learned to win a game of cricket, so Why cant they build a kit car?????????? My wife has a Jag, its reliable, Jaguar used to be the joke of world motering. My defender is built by the same compony!!!!!!! So far I have spent almost $90000 buying and kitting out this vehicle, come on Land Rover get with the program.

    Love the thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Allan
Our SVX has also had a ride on a flatbed recovery truck to spend a few days at the dealer because of the fuel metering valve.
When coasting in neutral we get a weird knocking noise. Sadly the dealer says this noise is normal and they all do it. Strange that it has only just started happening.
Ah. The joys of our Defender. BUT it shouldn't be this way.

Please keep us posted on whether the rattle has gone or not. I think all of us who experience the mysterious cold engine rattle have had the fuel metering valve (I presume this is the fuel pressure regulating valve you're referring to) replaced along with the EGR and yet our rattles persist.

Interesting that you have also had to have the clutch replaced. So have I and yes, it made a huge difference. Why do I get the feeling that Land Rover are building the Defender using seconds, and then following up with replacements using the parts they should have in the first place.

Sorry but I don't believe it.The cold engine knock is common across every make of common rail engines. It's uneven combustion IMHO,nothing to do with the fuel valve. With clutches it seems to be they are good or bad, once again IMHO I think they are like brake pads as far as once they stopped using asbestos the quality went south as there is no other product that's as good as it. you may think its nothing to do with the fuel valve Pat.....which I'm inclined to agree as you well know it hasn't fixed ours hence my comment.

But in Allans defence the reason we have had ours changed out is not lets try this and see what happens, we have had the relevant fault cod logged (the log for a failed valve) on our car more than once hence the changing of it.

So possibly the valve failing is a consequence of the more main problem...

Thats very correct. The code was displayed on both occasions, hence the replacement. What else can the dealer do. You can only suck it and see. The clutch problem is the pressure plate springs not what the plate is made from. I remember Ford Falcons had a problem like this 35 years ago when I was a machanic at lynfords. I will keep up with the engine noise and keep every one imformed. This morning no noise and temp bloody cold (for Perth,) Long trip comming up soon so will have plenty off time to gather imfo. If it all turns to crap Landrover will now about it for sure, if they care???????

Trouble with clutch's is that they get hot spots on the face of them which then causes the shuddering which then floggs the springs out and I think causes alot of the R380 trouble such as broken mainshafts as 2.5 tons of defender gets loaded and unloaded through the shudder to the shaft,it is the reason that disc's wear now with the pads,it's the only way to get a good brake effect. For all it's bad pionts, such as causing a bad death, asbestos was the best friction material around. Never had shudder just chatter at low speed. The clutch would rattle like hell if you did not depress it when starting/stopping the engine, hot or cold. This vehicle has only done 6500km. Its not done any hard off road work as yet . The dealer tells me some of the clutches have had this problem.
