I don't own a Puma but feel the need to get involved anyway
Have been looking for a TD5 and was thinking of stretching the budget to a new Puma, this thread has put me off that idea I think Ill get a low km TD5 and let you guys be the LR R&D bunnies and get one in a couple of years where there soughted.
The Tdi has been raised before but unfortunately the poll component expired:

Go for it but remember that Tdi and the Td5 covered both Discos and Defenders not llike the Puma. So the statistics gathered in the Defender section will not be truly representative.

There is much more to the Puma engined Defender than the engine...
Remember that the question was about the motor and not the package. The package is a arguably a superior one......and besides by the time you want to buy a new perfect Defender there will not be one.
Like everything LR when everything is sorted they change it ....which is why you can't buy a new Series I II III, County, 200Tdi 300Tdi or Td5 and all the combinations in between.
And where is the fun in that?

JohnR's post made me remember this thread.
We ended with n=47.
74% have had no problems
26% have had problems
4% have needed engine replacement
Maybe it is time for an updated poll?
mines just clicked over 10,000 ks, and all good can't complain

16,000km in 17 months without a single warranty issue. The wife's work is 1.5 km from home hence the low kiliometers, but we have done a few 2000km + trips in the WA interior. One recall on an output seal and the front door stays tightened up is all that's been done other than 6 monthly servicing.
As with all statistics, a trend is already appearing. Very few people write on forums that the car is functioning ok and all is good. People tend to discuss issues and difficulties which usually has a couple other people defending the other side of the coin.
Lets hope we get good representation from Puma owners and finally put the mith of an overall unreliable car to rest.
I'll vote after Xmas,I'm doing the Gun Barrel,Great Central over and back and we've just bought a camper so it'll bring up any issue's. Pat
I just knocked over 93,500 and the only probelm I've had since I took delivery at 92,000 ha sbeen the commonrail valve. Went into limp mode and was then fine. Going in for valve replacement next week as part of the final warranty expiring work!
Love Defenders, me.
