Not a bad solution. Ripe for electrification of the dailys.

I posted a few days ago about the ethings that are over running out bike paths in QLD.
So there was an 8 yo die on Thursday when two collided. And another teenager die last night. I hope action will come.

BYD to allow their cars to be used in V2g.
Just a moment...
The FIAT is project, intended to be moved on to someone younger and richer than me. The FIAT shell was going to be crushed, And they are getting so rare I simply couldn't let it happen. I rescued it for posterity, and I really couldn't afford to do so. But someone will give it love.
The OKA will eventually be my home from home. I will have it on Club Permit plates, although insurance doesn't change, but I will also put the D2 on club.
I'm not being hard on anyone. I was merely pointing out that people have different needs, and incomes. What works for your neighbour won't work for me. My son has a GU Patrol, his wife has a Y62, and he drives a N60 (?) petrol Hilux to work. They have a massive camper trailer and a speed boat and numerous motorcycles. Sure, they need the cars, and they work to pay for them.
For me, the D2 is what I need. Sure, I'm now single and it's a silly car for one person, but I no longer do high ks on a daily basis, but I DO tow heavy stuff, and I DO get off road when poss. I don't fit the good Captain's definition of insanity, and I clearly don't have his disposable income.
I have absolutely no issue with his choices, or yours. But you can't just make blanket statements based on your own priorities, as they aren't mine. And mine have changed again lately. Cancer will do that.
However, if you want to help me move the D1 and SIII on I'm open to negotiations[bigwhistle]
Edjt: I always mix up Patrols. He has a GU that started life as a 3.0 auto, so now it’s a TD42 auto, which is unusual.
Sorry, I can't help with the Fiat, D1 or SIII, as I like wagons and have had four of them. I bought the D3 as IMO it is a car for for all seasons being 4wd, as big as a van inside and a technological masterpiece. Good on you for saving those cars and I hope they go to a good home.
Typical forum thread, off on a tangent, now who is going to get back on track to EV chatter.
I quite like the Edison Motors setup of big generator to recharge big battery while having the electric diffs.
A D3/D4 would be a good beast to put electric motors in place of the diffs and being chassis/inboard mounted should last longer than the diff mounted live axle setups.
But these conversions are so costly unless you have play money or a business case forget it.
I think modern landrovers would be far far too complex to convert given the integration issues. Land Rover currently sell a few PHEV's.
Old ones like the defender do seem to be ideal for it as there are many conversions. Which are very very expensive but very very nice.
Jaunt - Land Rover Electric Conversions
It would be nice, as would an electric OKA. But until battery tech and charging infrastructure catches up to the convenience and reliability of diesel then either car would be pointless. The reason I bought an OKA was my late wife said I should get out and see the country at my own pace and not at 100 km/h in a B-Double. Of course, many, many things have got in the way of that goal since, but if it happened then I would be going remote, and no EV could be trusted to get me back. They simply do not have the range or refuelling capability to tackle the CSR or Googs. Apparently OKA is working on a fuel cell powered OKA...Yep, and I'm working on winning Powerball.
I have the skills, if not the physical ability, to fix a Defender or OKA. Who could fix a Tesla 4x4 in the bush, if they are ever adventurous enough to build one? Or a BYD Shark? Yes, the latter is PHEV, but I can't fix those either, and I have no intention of learning. My step daughter's Prius is bad enough.
In my case it's probably moot anyway, as proximity to specialists appears to be in my future, but I don't want to give up on the dream. And, perhaps, the dream is why some people keep their 4WD's, which may be insanity but it's also understandable.
100% agree. It's difficult enough putting a TDV8 in a D4, even though its sister car came with one from factory. Sure, it could be done, and probably has been, but it would be out of reach for most people who aren't rich Americans... They're crazy enough to offer to buy the FIAT, so they could do anything.
I'm not clear who is buying the series/defender conversions. I don't think they would be exceedingly useful for very much. They would be a fun city car and perhaps fun for short forays off road. While I'm sure they would be awesome as a farm vehicle - I doubt many famers would see that as capital well spent. Perhaps for wealthy hobby farmers. Having said that there are a lot of vehicles that are bought for fun, and in the volumes these would sell I wish them all the best. Why not?
When I think of what I use my 4x4 for.. it's hard to see a usage case for an electrified defender. It's hard enough to keep your phone charged on fraser let alone an inefficient 4x4 EV.
My argument has never been that EV's are useful for everything. Just that they are pretty useful, and the majority of people I see in the city don't use the capabilities of their suv's, let alone proper 4x4. In my suburban street I reckon there are probably 12 4x4/dualcabs, and another 7 op 8 or so "SUVs". of the SUVs, I've not seen any evidence of any of them being used for anything other than city duties. Of the 4x4/dualcabs, Certainly my defender, and there is another couple down the street which I know have been off road at some point but are also used as city cars. My neighbours for instance, have a jeep 4x4 and a ranger. In the couple of years they have been here, I've never even seen the cars dirty let alone recovering from a trip to the beach or bush. The jeep is the wifes just for school run and the ranger is just I suspect for ego stroking. When they tell us they are going on holiday - it's always Bali. :o
I remember discussing cars with a workmate a few years back. He was after a new family vehicle for ferrying their four kids around. I suggested a VW caddy, and a Carnival if I remember. The message got back to me "Who do you think I am - Postman Pat?". And they bought their prado.
I really do think people underestimate the power of car company marketing. They've been nibbling at it since forever. 4x4's are the cash cow that they just need to keep milking. I really do think that for a very significant majority of Australians living in cities could have an EV for their next car, if they were to objectively assess it but they are swayed by marketing. I advocate that let's just electrify the easy things first! When I see people in shiny 4x4's that have clearly never been off road I just start humming...
EDIT: I acknowledge that the term SUV is problematic, and some of the cars I called SUV's are in fact just boxy bodies on cars. They are just the new cooler station wagons.
EDIT: Objective thinking when it comes to car purchase decisions is certainly not a given, and I don't know how we can stop the firehose of car company marketing pushing 4x4.
