I bet that nutter sells solar/batteries/electrics or has an interest in "green energy" in some way.
I'll admit the statement "petrol car is worthless" might be a bit strong. But - I also think it's a bit premature to call it too. He may well be right.

The war is still going. Much of the infra is damaged and it's not over yet. I can't see any chance of us seing the fuel prices we had a month ago in the next year or maybe two. It's just not happening. If more of the infra is damaged and that 20% doesn't return to the system I can see very elevated prices for a long time.

Australias oil that we have and is known about is predominately light.. better for petrol rather than diesel. If diesel wasn't in trouble before (and it was) I can see the near extinction of private transport that uses diesel in the future.

In the 70's the oil crisis significantly changed the automotive landscape. It seems unlikely that what's happened already hasn't already had a significant impact on the way people think about personal transport.

It's also just possible that we are looking at a major fuel crisis that will change the way people look at "War Juice". As I've opined (and you've disputed) people have been chosing big thirsty cars because the car makers have tried diligently to make DC's and SUV's drive well. And yeah they can do lots and if fuel is cheap why not.

IMHO we might see people significantly rethinking their choices. We might be going back to the 90's where people drove smaller cars and had a box trailer for the odd jobs that are now done by DC's.. But instead of small cars it will likely be EV's. As I've said before my EV has a 1600kg braked tow rating. It would tow my little camper trailer for local trips, and laugh over a box trailer for the bunnings/dump runs.

My colleage ordered a Tesla last weekend. It was "march April" Delivery. By Sunday it was April -May delivery As at now.. one weekd later it's June July delivery!.

Further I can see the whole "Grey Nomad" big lap thing being irrepairably damaged. I fear for the little towns throughout the outback who have found an additional source of income from tourism. I am genuinely sad about that. Even the unthinkable.. I'm glad I have a camper rather than a monster van. Perhaps even the defender will have to be questioned.. new cars use a lot less fuel.

I don't think that the Manly Ferry could do a round the world trip.

So being a millionaire he just bought another one and kept the first for spares.

Extremely unlikely that a Tesla would be shipped to Japan for repairs when Teslas were never built there - there's no connection at all, and no facilities. Perhaps this friend of a friend is confusing Japan and China?

Ha ha ha ha ha! Not a chance, even if the 'Barrel Price' dropped to $10 !

Can you envisage the Government, or fuel cartel, giving up one of their prime, parasitic incomes?

Instead of having 'A finger in the Pie', they're up to their elbows in it!

I'll be pleasantly surprised if we ever see lower than $2.50 a litre, again.

I know we are all guessing, but in a year or two we may also see the second hand vehicle market flooded with second hand EVs.
After those that did the knee jerk reaction and bought them don't want them for whatever reason.

Perhaps, or it could equally go the other way.

We just need a crystal ball.

Or to be in the watsapp group with donald.. that would really make us some money!

    Porsche Cayenne electric

Porsche’s 1,140bhp SUV sparks safety debate

Porsche’s new Cayenne Turbo Electric is its most powerful production car to date, delivering up to 1,140bhp and 0–100km/h in around 2.5 seconds. Reviewers highlight its blend of extreme performance, comfort, and advanced suspension technology, while also questioning whether such capabilities are suitable for a family SUV. The model’s debut is prompting wider discussion over the balance between performance engineering and public road safety.

Would it tow my boat- Who cares I am not paying that much Cayenne Electric
Have to say 350 miles at 70mph is pretty good as is the very fast charge IF such chargers arrive some time some place some day

If you're buying a porche like that there is no way your boat is trailerable. It's moored at a nice yacht club and you can drive their quickly for weekends on the water.

From Chris_o on twitter. JPMorgan research apparently.

Probably we will see a transition away from "it's fine.. we've got plenty of fuel" mid - later next month. A reduction in fuel excise won't help you if you can't find fuel to buy.

I wonder what it sounds like? I'll never forget driving in a longish tunnel, in Europe and wondering what the ever-increasing noise I could hear was. It was a Porsche, Turbo 911 at high speed. What a wonderous sound, as it went past us, who were not exactly dawdling, at the time. Would've turned Greta on, I reckon!!
