And our 2008 DSG Passat has been faultless, apart from a bulb in the boot, same as the Defender, so there you go.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Given they made 5.7 million cars in 2012, i haven't heard that many bad story's,
if 0.1 % were lemons that's 5700 lemons, which i supposes is 5700 too many

One bad story: A woman in Melbourne died in a Golf as it just stopped on the motorway and a truck ran into it. I suspect that it had a similar issue to my friend's car. This fault appears to be common in Golfs, as a Google search indicates lots of posts (not many resolutions though). Aussie motor scribes have said if you want a car for 10 years get a Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai; Golf is ok when under warranty.

All hype - the inquest found that the Golf was not the issue and the crash was most likely related to the women talking on the phone. The Golf she was driving was not a DSG but a normal manual.

A friend of mine I was talking to last Sunday has a Skoda Octavia that's around 5 years old with a recent DSG failure to its credit. He was quietly driving along on cruise control when he heard "a hoon nearby revving his engine like mad". Shortly he realised it was his car with the trans reduced to a box full of neutrals. After shutting down the car he restarted, the car drove home normally. On contacting the dealer they sent out a tilt tray and took it away. It turned out there's a critical wire in the sump with low quality insulation. The insulation fails, a short circuit freaks the ECU and causes a loss of drive. Apparently a common problem according to his mechanic.

All cars seem to have common problems don't they, but you never seem to here all the good stuff about cars. Never had a problem (except for the injector recall on the Passat) with any of our vw's, had more problems with our Subaru, commodore, falcons, Hyundai, land rovers, don't get me started on land rovers
Basically if it has moving parts, it has "common problems"
