I can't identify this one, may be a juvenile. Taken at Upper Carawine Gorge, WA. It's about as big as a Willy Wagtail. Any suggestions?

That it is what I sais, the metadata in your image said that the flash was fired (used)
Also, without read the metadata the flash light can be seen in the eye.

Nice image, good job. Try to use the camera in manual it is a lot of fun.

Not a night time shot, but trying to take a picture looking into a hollow tree branch (about 100mm dia.) whilst shining torch light in, all the while precariously balancing on a chair. Dangerous business this photography.

All birds of prey photos were taken recently and I am reasonably happy with the results but would be happier if they were a bit sharper. I am still playing with this lens/camera combo and these were all taken hand held with VR on. I reckon 340mm is about the right setting for this lens and need to get used to dialling it back, next I plan to see if turning VR off improves the sharpness as some users say. Is there any value in going to TIFF's instead of hi res JPEG's ?. I've tried RAW but have difficulty editing them with the Nikon proprietry software. Any suggestions ?

Thanks Deano:)

Have just sorted through photo's from last years outback holiday. Came across these from Rudall River (Karlamilyi) National Park. Australias 2nd largest according to SWMBO next to Kakadu. Quite remote it's approx. 300 Km east of Newman in WA.
Whilst Button Quail are common in this area these Brown Quail ? are not, according to Mr Slater and family. Came out just on dusk, terrible light. A good result considering.

They are excellent and wouldn't look out of place in a bird identification book.. I did feel that a couple of them could do with a tiny bit more contrast just to give them a little more zing.. :)

Thanks Sue for the kind words. Couldn't agree with you more on your critique. It's just a matter of figuring it out. Post Production is one answer but I have a major problem wrapping my head around PhotoShop so use less sophisticated/capable software. Using RAW instead of Hi Res JPG's might improve the result but the problem again is good editing software. I've got a feeling that the D300 has a more 'vivid' capture setting and 'photo enhancement' software built in. Have to find the book and have a read. Tended to shy away from this in the past. Realistically though I'll just have to take better photos.:)
Thanks again Sue for the input.

Was pretty happy with this though.:D

Best place to be Ron. There's plenty of good helpful advice here and the benefit of seeing what others are up to. Chucaro's advice in particular is always helpful as is the input of others including Bushie and KarlB.
Best of all it's an opportunity to 'show your stuff' and get good advice on how to do it even better.
I see you've sorted your blurry picture issue. Very nice.

Now, living in Tasmania I have the chance to add new birds in my collection.
This is a Yellow throaded honeyeater Lichenostomus flavicollis
The natural light was not the best, with a temperature over 35 the birds were close to a little water supply with a dense canopy over it and there was were I have my chances.
I have some more birds that I will post soon.:)

Spied this Greater Coucal or Crow Pheasant (Centropus sinensis) (I'm no bird expert, had to look it up) battling, killing and then eating a snake that I cannot identify (no expert here either).
Had to shoot through a rather grimy and heavily tinted window so quality is not what one might have expected from a Nikon D3s + 28-300 combo.

This is a Barking Owl (Ninox connivens). Reasonably common in dry forest areas. Their calls do sound like dogs barking and they also have a blood-curdling scream, which they refer to as the "Screaming woman" call and it has been known to fool many folks into thinking there is a murder being committed. Google the calls and hear for yourself. :)

One of the rarer birds we saw last year (in the wild of course!) on our lap:

A pair crossed casually in front of the Disco in the Pink Lakes NP. Had to slam the brakes on!

not really. the light was really crap, i shake from too many years swinging hammers and the d90 doesnt have the a/f fine tuning so i need to manually do it every time :P

The pose of the birds is very nice, it is descriptive of their behavior and show some action.
I would suggest to use the in built flash in avian photography so the eyes of the birds have an spark on it. Without it the sockets are empty.
It will be possible to ad the spark in PP but it is not the same.

The only way to get closer to these birds is by dragging yourself in the ground for 20 meters or so.

They are a large bird and lay their eggs in a crows nest.Their young are among the noisiest in the bird world and keep the crows on the hop feeding them. All the crows young are kicked out of the nest.
If the nest is to close to your home, you will finish blowing the nest to bits with a shotgun, the noise is out of this world.

Yes, join a forum and read the critique on the photos so you get an idea of how to compose an image and what people are looking at.
For birds the Australian forum Feathers and Photos (http://www.feathersandphotos.com.au/forum/forum.php) is among the best and the members are top people with excellent knowledge.
I am not very active on it now because the limitations on my gear for avian photography.

Generally I ignore the BG and concentrate on the bird. My first appreciation are on the beak and eyes and then look at the plumage.
Blacks and whites are hard to expose and some times the camera need a bit of help with PP to enhance the details.
I am sure that you are going able to "pop-up" this image without any problem.
Have a look THIS (http://arthur-plottier.megashot.net/photos/106643/gallery/2342) image so you can see what I mean regarding the plumage.
I do my PP using PSCS5 which give you good control of the image.
Feathers and Photos is excellent and people there are not arrogant like in other avian forums.

I agree with you and you are doing very well. The reds on the parrots are very easy to "burn" if the exposure it is not spot on.
You got them spot on.
There are some important rules in avian photography and they are:
1) Sharp beak and eyes
2)Spark of light on the eye other ways they look like an empty socket
3) Good head turn so an eye and the beak are well exposed.
4) Overall sharpens of the bird.

I have just a Fuji "Finepix S6500fd" which I only use in "auto" mode. It does what I need, but I'm hoping to learn how to use it properly without it being on auto all the time.
But anyway, whilst away at Xmas down on the coast, we had these little guys around us a fair bit, so I took a pic ;)

If you want to see inspiring photos of all kinds I advocate going to YMCA and other Op-Shops and picking up an armful of old National Geographics. Some places want 20c each, some 40c. Its a way cheaper option than expensive coffee table books. Of course, nothing beats your local library.

My first post to this wonderful thread, I got the chance to take pictures of two large flocks of cranes with the second one flying quiet low.

Sure the pictures are not of the quality of the masters of the thread :D but the importance is to participate.

I was using the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM L for the majority of the pictures but had to use my old 75-300mm zoom lens to get the close-ups.

Your comments are very welcomed.

couple of images 'snapped off' today by my wife with her point and shoot, out the passenger window (Lumix FZ200) all I did in Photoshop was straighten the horizon and crop the edges & resize for limited bandwidth.

no way I can get these opportunistic images with my much better camera by the time I pull up and grovel around for my camera and then change lenses the subject is long gone.

This young wedgy turned up at one of the quarries I work at recently. Mum and dad fly around and keep an eye on him/her. What gets us is that he/she like sitting on top of the drilling rig mast while we drill. The noise and vibration is incredable. Anyway he/she likes donuts, ham sandwiches, some fruits, bread and chases things we throw along the ground. Will try and get some good shots with a proper camera one day. This is with a mobile through the window of the rig. Eating said donut.

Was a fantastic pet,she used to chase the cricket ball and bring it back to us.
She was on a long chain and running line with leathers(jessies),i think we called them, for many years.
Had a wonderful personality, happy to be with you like a dog.

Those were the days before you had to have permits, etc for keeping native wildlife.Cant remember where she came from, but had been in captivity from a very young age.

Anyway,back to bird pics:p

Very well capture Paul and it is sharp.
The whites in the head are a tad overexposed which it is a very common problem on these birds.
You can adjust that during PP, specially in the raw (nef) image.
You can select the area and adjust the exposure on it or select the withes and adjust them.
By selecting the whites you have to be very careful because it is a high sensitive adjustment and it can be overdone.
Do not do the adjustment on contrast because it destroy the original, do it on a new adjustment layer which allows you to do PP adjustments without upsetting the original image.
Which PP software are you using?

A couple of regulars around my yard.....

We had a pair digging out an ant nest for the last week or so in our front yard.
Haven't seen them around for a couple of days.
Saw a broken egg under the nest today, grabbed the ladder and had a look, bloody possum has taken over the nest:mad:

Bit of sheet metal around the tree is the go,hopefully the birds return.

Yes Paul, the red shoulder ones known as Scarlet Macaw fetch more money that the others.
I have done all the research to start breeding Amazons which costs $3500 + but the cost of the security is very expensive and I would become prisoner in my own home.

I do not think that in Australia are Hyacinth macaws they go for more that $30000 easy but they cannot take any more out of Brasil.

I have bred many birds over the years but have kept away from exotic types for that reason.

The guy who lives next to one of my brothers also has two,but has been unsuccessful trying to breed them.Haven't seen them for a while and can't remember what type they are.He has successfully bred black, and another type,i think they are, palm cockatoos.
