I watched his Canning stock route DVD about 3 weeks before we did it, and that trip really opened my eyes to how much he plugs his sponsers.

I dont mind them getting mentioned, but an example was his perelli scorpions and how they survived the trip and you would be foolish to use anything else..Well I seen cars do that trip with H/T tyres and drive out on the same tyres they went in with, same with my Wranglers and the other cars with bridgestones, coopers, etc.

All in All his shows are good and am sure he knows his stuff , just think abit of footage of all his assistants cars and stuff, might give some more insight to what it really takes...ie his comment that he decided 1 day to do the canning and 10 days later he did it...with the aid of 3 other cars with mechanics, a cook and all the other stuff, but that wasnt shown, so people may think they can do the same..

Cant see his shows changing any, so guess Nissan will get plenty more plugs.

    My 2c worth

    Cheers Ean

Credit where its due for sure, I would love to do what he is doing, not knocking the bloke at all, and my initial post was not meant to come across that way if it did.

Having said that I believe some contructive criticism of the show isnt a bad thing, things dont improve without it. I dont see knocking the show because of excessive product placement is tall poppy syndrome. He knows his stuff for sure, he wouldnt have his own TV show if he didnt have something to bring to the table.

    Wasn't quoting you.

But you are probably better sending constructive criticism here :

There is another tv show 4x4 galore. Now that is a example of a more real world 4wd show. I had bagged it a bit for it`s ocker amateur style. But you sure don`t get the sponsor line, sort of shows you can do a show with out the hard sell. Still be watching Pat`s show when I can though.

I've done the Canning Stock Route more than once and on one of the occasions we were in an absolute bush basher of a car with tires that should have been condemned. CSR is a bit of a walk in the park really...it's just very, very long

Having said that, I've got Perelli Scorpions on my Hilux Surf and they are pretty damn good

EDIT: I guess if you want real outback adventure then you should watch Northern Safari, Across the Top and the Leyland Brother movies. No bs, no advertising just hardcore adventure Hell, in Northern Safari he was in a bunky buic and he crossed land that many people wouldn't take their Landies :P

Fair enough, thought it may have been seeing as I seem to have started this discussion. I'd send the criticism if I thought channel 10 would give a rats arse.

    So it's de-constructive criticism

Send it to Pat at the address above then...he'll respond

Times were a lot different when they were made. No mobile phones, no air lockers, no max traxx...necessity - indeed survival - was the mother of invention.

Northern Safari (1956) clip 1 on ASO - Australia's audio and visual heritage online

Unless a doco is federally funded by way of the ABC/SBS etc, the cost is borne by the individual...unless they can get sponsors on board. And sponsors want value for money, especially when it comes to commercial television ala Pat Callinan's 4x4 adventures. Modern day fact of life.
