    Cheap P & S

    G’Day All,
Hope you all had a safe and fun holiday period.
With the upcoming birth of my 1st child the better half wants something better than the phones camera to record important milestones.
We have a budget of about $300. Picture quality and ease of use are the main considerations. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

G'Day, and welcome to the forum.

Sony have a little camera that is great. It is waterproof, and shock proof and is really easy to use.

    Sony DSCTX20B 16.2MP Digital Camera - Digital Cameras - JB Hi-Fi - Smashing Prices!

I've seen them for $199. I purchased mine a little while ago for $450 (then a new release). It does really great low light, auto stitching panorama, movies the works and the image quality is great.

Mine has had a very hard life, its battered and has been dropped many times. Never missed a beat, and still waterproof. Takes great shots underwater too.

    I just purchased a Pentax Q. They were $750 but I got it for $200 with the f1.9 lens. Pentax Q Review - Overview - PentaxForums.com

I've ordered an adapter so I can use my Pentax M42 and K-mount lenses with it.

Looking thru my local 2nd hand store as i often do i came across a Pentax Optio S6 p&s camera for $9.99 with charger and 512mb SD card, its about the size of a credit card and 13mm thick.
Perfect for dropping in a shirt pocket on the way out instead of lugging an SLR around, only 6 MP but thats fine for viewing on PC or TV.

I hadnt thought about 2nd hand stores. Might go to the local Cash Converters on the weekend and see what they have there.

I think ill also go to Teds down the road from work and check out the Pentax in the flesh as well.

    Thanks for the suggestions

I'm in the same boat but also looking for something that can handle a 4x4 trip.

I can buy either one of these with my credit card points:
LUMIX DMC-FT20 Compact Camera, Consumer Products | Panasonic Australia

Olympus TG-320 Tough Digital Compact Camera | Olympus Imaging Australia

They appear pretty similar spec wise but I thought I'd ask if anyone has any experience with them.

I just bought the Olympus TG-1. For the same use as you say, great photos, can be abused and live in the glovebox it can also be charged by USB. It's also waterproof so it doesn't matter if it gets wet or dropped in the river and it can take photos underwater. $350 from Harvey Norman. It has no lens cover so does need a pouch to be kept in.
    Cheers
