IMO they are usually fitted to the PAX/Left side as in Oz, UK, South Africa etc, the left is classed as the 'safe side'. That said, you never camp on the side of a freeway/road!! Ironically, mine is on the right as I have a ladder to the roof on the left!
I put mine on the passenger side of my Defender as I knew I was going to store the fridge behind the passenger seat and the back door opens from the passenger side outwards.
in addition to that, when I was learning to drive, Dad always taught me that I'm more likely to have a puncture on the passenger side tyres due to all the rubbish and debris on the side of the road and potholes from bad surfacing.
As it happens I've had 2 punctures in the last two years - both on the passenger side. One was a 6mm screw, the other a sidewall split.
Awning came out both times for a spot of shade while repairing/ swapping to the spare.
