FWIW, my <$100 DIY self supported awning (no down poles needed), use tarp for other things when not used as awning... like lying under vehicle to fix things can arrange in various sizes... depending on size of tarp and length of adjustable tent poles

    I bought cheap from Tigerz11 so 2.5 x 3.0 wasn't an option at the time, I had to choose between 2.0 x 3.0 or 2.5 x 2.5

With shade bigger is better as long as your tie down pegs can cope with any wind, the 2m length is a bit short so as the sun moves the shaded area moves too so chairs have to move.

The width (or roll out length) is less important as the car is at one end and creates a good shade area that doesn't move.

If I were to choose again, I'd get the longest version that I could fit on the car, even bumper to bumper if I could find one, the width that it rolls out to is less important, even 2m would be fine.

We're getting a little away from roof racks, but while the subject is awnings, has anyone had any experience with this awning?:

    BunduTec - WING AWNING

I like the look of it.

Hmmm, that bundutec awning is interesting. I like their folding roof top tent idea too.

I'm planning on buying their 'BunduTop' roof top tent. I'm not so keen on folding ones, I figure I'll get the electric up and down.

When it was being setup, it seemed to bounce, which could mean that if it got really windy, the frame could bend and being alloy, makes it hard to repair, it's a great idea, I'd feel more convident if the support frame was steel though.

I just pop riveted a 2.4m sail track on the drivers side

    And got a 2.4m x 3 m tarp made up to suit bought 4

Tent poles and if it windy or cold driving rain shorten it

Up to 1,5 or 2 m and fold the end over in to a sorta wall
