but it's easy enough to make something - anything metal that keeps the food off the bottom will do - I saw someone once use a pair of pliers spread out to keep his bread tin off the bottom. I just got a cheap metal round cake stand from K Mart that seems to work OK.

I was interested to see that picture of a trivett. I had heard they make a difference but I was thinking more in terms of a cake rack. This device looks more substantial.
On the upcoming trip we'll be taking in two vehicles 2 ten inch Furphys and a couple of smaller ones. My mate has a collection of old and new camp ovens and inspite of space being at a premium on these trips he just can't seem to manage to leave one behind. They get used though, one for the roast, one for the vegies and one for the bread/dessert.
Furphys are brilliant but it is sad that they are now made in China, not at the original foundary. But I have seen a new one and comparing it to my older Oz made I'd say the quality is the same. Australian Furphies have the year of manufacture cast into the lid.
Furphys are not the Rolls Royce of camp ovens as said in this thread - they are the Land Rover of camp ovens.
After following this thread and looking at other "traditional" camp cooking ways, I bought the ingenious Hillbilly camp over system from the 4x4 expo.
A little pricey ($290 all in), but contained everything I need for some more inspired camp cooking than just frying stuff up on the usual Coleman portable BBQ.
The whole thing comes in a heavy duty vinyl bag which is a little bigger than the oven base itself. Pack consists of:
Large size oven in spun steel
Trivett (steel)
Veggie roasting insert - (like a piece of steel guttering that sits in the oven meaning that you can place veggies in on top of the meat at a later time.
Lid for coals / large fry pan - spun steel and receses into the oven
Rack for pans if you have coals ontop of the lid.
Gas converter - that is able to invert this applying heat to the lid and to the bottom of the oven. It also has a fry plate.
119 receipe book - although you can cook just about anything that you could need in, on or around this.
Better explained in pictures below - needless to say that I have tried some bread baking in it and am happy with the results - even if the bread tasted of burned manufaturing oils first off. Will settle with seasoning.

I have been using a hillbilly for a couple of yrs.They are sensational for a roast(most tender campoven roast i have had).I use the old cast one for the roast spuds(i use frys cooking fat).Next i will get a full set of there fry pans
Yep me too, a firm believer that the Hillbilly gear is the best and most versitile camp oven i've used, i also have the campstand too.

Had a real good look at the Hillbilies at the last 4x4 show and the complete kit is a great versatile package but I couldn't justify the $$$$ at the moment.
I ended up buying a Aussie Camp Oven from Southern Metal Spinners in Sth Aussie, a pretty versatile unit and at 9qt size its lighter than my 4qt cast iron oven, which fits inside the Aussie for space saving when packing
Does anyone know if you can use the cast iron gas burners that they have most camping shops upside down like the hillbilly setup as they lokk like the same style of burner![]()
