    Unhappy Front diff, rear seal leaking

    Hi All,

    After doing lots of trips & checking everything, I found after my high country trip I have diff oil on the bottom of the front housing. Diff oil is fine & no water has gotten in. I have tracked it to the seal at the back of the diff where the drive shaft goes in to.

    Now how to fix it?

    Given I haven't done one of these before - how hard would it be to do in your driveway??

    If its a case of having all the right tools to do the job & a hoist then I'll just take her up to AMV - but wanted to ask first as I am guessing at some stage in my 4WD life I will do a diff or axle and will have to know how to fix her up.

    It's very easy.
    Undo the propshaft and hang it out of the way.
    Undo the big nut holding the yoke on.
    Pull out the yoke. fish out the seal. Fit new seal.

    Make sure no lines on the yoke seal surface, and if there is put the seal in a new position.
    However you need to be sure of two things.
    That the axle breathers are clear ( simple just blow through em)
    That the seal has not failed because the pinion bearings are on the way out.

    I am thinking just the seal due to taking a few hits - but I'll check those breathers before I undo anything!! thanks again!!

    Just to update - I was under the car yesterday & decided to torque up the nuts for said housing - its no longer leaking!

    Seems with all the trips I have done they became a little un-torqued I'll say - as they were not loose so to speak I have checked the breather hose - its ok - but I will be running new ones up higher!!

    These housing's do not use a gasket as such but a silicon type sealant. Which is still all good.

    Now I just need to seal up the bottom pin seal for the left swivel housing lol Cheers all!!

    They do come with quite a thick gasket but IMHO that was before sealants were invented.
    I use Locktite flange sealant and works well , but must put the diff centre a little off centre for the axles, but doesn't seem to be a problem.
