    Engine number change - QLD

I'm in the process of swapping out my very tired 3.5 to a 4.0 from a P38 (with the 3.5 intake manifold), am I going to need a mod plate or is it simply a case of filling out the 'change of details' form at QLD transport?

Any help and advise gratefully appreciated.

If it is anything like Vic or SA it should be a simple form to fill out and maybe an inspector will check the new engine number.

Technically you need a mod plate if the engine was not an optional one for the vehicle.

(did 89 rangies come with 4.0's???)

However, I doubt the person processing the form will realise...

In NSW you are allowed 15% increase in displacement without an Engineers report. Maybe check Qld Transport site as it is on the RTA site.

The 4.0 are really a 3.9 but renamed to differentiate them owing to the different block design, e.g., cross bolted mains, etc.

BUt AFAIK your car would be an 88 MY build maybe sold in 1989, but it probably would have been built prior to August 1988. For example mine is a 92 MY built September 91. If it is built after August 1988 then you would have a real point as I know some late 3.5s had Borg Warners and maybe they were built in 89MY cars but with some leftover engines LOL.

The poms usually start next year models after the August break.

89 MODELS all have 3.9s which are 3954CC same as 4.0 litre.
The rumour is that LR renamed the motor to match the size of the Jeep engine in Marketing.
I think you should be able to spin a bit and suggest that 3.9 was an option in 1989 wink wink.

Yes the Range Rover Classics had both 3528cc and from 1989 3946cc engines. Under the NSW 15% rule you can go to 4057cc and only need a blue slip inspection to change the RTA records.

The 4.0 was the P38a variant of the engine, but the same displacement as the 1989-1995 3.9L RRc.

BTW merely boring the 3.5 engine 0.040 oversize you end up over 3.7litre!

    Thanks for all the replies!

After checking the engine number it looks like it could well be a 4.6 block, it is cross bolted so definitely a P38 block.

Visually it'll look the same but obviously the displacement is bigger. If I filled in the change of details form and went to QT, would they check the engine number to see what it is?
