Spook, have a look on the Ashcroft site.
You will see that it is the governor sticking and indicates a transmission on its last legs.

    Hi Spook,
Philip A is on to it. I had this same problem with another make of vehicle. I got the T700 auto box rebuilt and it did the same thing shortly after. Turns out it was only the governor and i guess i was stiffed $1,700 for the rebuild. The other auto shop replaced the governor with a good second hand one and it has never missed a beat. There is a good chance there is nothing wrong with your box, just a buggered governor and cheap to fix. Ask a "reputable" auto tranny fitter.

    Cheers.....................Pete!

Bugger - we've got one thats just been fitted thats doing the same thing - beware of buying 2nd hand regardless of what the seller tells you, even if they're off this forum. Unless they have receipts to show what has been done. Ours has issues selecting reverse when cold also.

There is a rangie listed in the markets with a rebuilt auto - if you're handy with tools it might be an option.

Rebuild costs seem to vary from $3-4k

The ZF in my 1991RR has been refusing to change up when cold for a while now. This morning on my way to work it lost drive altogether and left me stranded. I have just towed the mongrel thing home.
The really frustrating bit is that I have only just swapped the transfer case over to LT230, decided to put off changing the auto at the time cos I needed the car going. Well it aint going now.
3rd time this car has seriously let me down- first one of the oil cooler lines split (now THAT is an oil leak!), then the centre splines in the TC failed, now the auto. Got me wondering what will give out next.

Bad things normally happen in 3's so hopefully that's it lol.
bit out of topic, I've been wondering whether to replace my engine oil cooler lines or not. The rubber still looks perfect and feels perfect but after 17 years..... mmmmmm. Did the rubber on yours look worn and brittle?
