.. To be honest, I just occasionally use these 3 & 4 letter abbreviations because other smart contributors do.
As far as I know, they have no real meaning.....![]()
Be advised that the smoke contained in British wiring has a tendency to escape, so you may find this link useful.

on the subject of engine for rangies what prices are the 2.7 and 3.0 from the late discoveries going for at the moment as simtek in england have sorted a wiring kit to fit to the p38 and classics. worht noying that according to figures I found the 2.7 has same hp as 3.9 with 78ftp better torque while the 3. gives 60hp more and 192ftp gain (but at what price?)
I took a punt on what was advertised as a stroked 3.5, sold as a 4.2 with a Motec fuel ecu on Ebay.
Fitted it all, and as it turns out was a cross bolted 4.6! Nicey nice!
Goes like a scalded cat (for a RRC), ooodles of torque and more economical than the old 3.5, even on gas!
Go the 4.6 route, you'll not regret it!![]()
Blimey! - what's with all this knocking Lucas?? I've had 5 Classics and only one ever caught fire!
Bee Uteys conversion is the ducks nuts BUT seriously, on my RRC90 I have the original Lucas dizzy mounted amplifier, now 20 years old and a Bosch MEC717 coil -10 years - both are still going strong...(doh, that's ****** it!). Point being if yours works fine save the cash and maybe leave it alone for now
That RRC on UK ebay - IMHO (in my humble opinion!) the dash mod is not factory- it's a common mod using a cut and shut instrument pod mounted on the coin tray. Many aftermarket conversion like Wood & Pickett & Overfinch did similiar. Often using another pod on the passenger side and 'bridging' the gap - bit like this dogs breakfast (attached jpg) from Wods site Range Rover, Wod's Site, History, conversion
... So, 20% of Rangies burn themselves up....![]()
Go for a top hatted 3.9 or 4.6 and get a quality LPG system installed. A bloke at Crafers could assist here.
My POS with a 350 and very primitive Impco system is as cheap to run as a TDI or Isuzu, maybe cheaper atm with gas @ 56 to 60 cpl and diesel @ $1.50.
cheers, DL
Yes, nice build. The trade off is grunt / dollars. Conversions aren't cheap these days and the one in mine wouldn't be legal to do now.
What I was trying to get at was that a strong 3.9 or 4.6 with a modern gas set up should be more economical than a diesel.
cheers, DL
