managed to get it off with 11mm 1/4 drive socket (what a pain) and i accidentally snapped the rubber hose (very easily) that went into the right of the valve with the s bend. maybe it was fractured an letting in air already. anyone know where to get a replacement???

Yep,both hoses are usually dry and cracked , replace them both .Standard item at most decent LR parts mobs .Dont you have a Rovacraft in Melbourne ?

right so the base acts as sensor? thats why its polished on the base and where it fixes to the motor? so when its "hot" it lets more air through to cool the plenum chamber? am i on the right track here?

No, its when its cold it lets more air through .Theres two gates in there , one is block temp controlled ,the other gets a signal from the ECU (hence that wiring plug). Cooling the plenum chamber is a novel idea !!That valve is compensate for load and enrichment at idle by adding extra air .This is why it shoud "idle" at arouind 1200rpm stone cold ,then drop to 800 RPM when warmed up .

Just go to the "Shop" area and "Daves things ", order your own Rave CD .
the "RRMAN86-94" is the one you want.RRMAN86-94

There is a bimetal strip inside the extra-air valve with an electrical heating element wrapped around it. The bimetal bends to rotate a disc with a funny-shaped hole in it, to gradually close off the orifice between the two hoses as the bimetal warms up with power from the ignition feed. With ignition off, it will gradually close as the engine cools. It simply feeds extra air into the plenum, exactly the same as if you held the throttle open a little.
I disassembled the valve on my 88RR by drilling out the rivets that hold the two halves together, tapping a 5mm thread in one half and reassembling the valve with 5mm socket-head capscrews. This enables a thorough clean.

The air hoses under the left side of the plenum are commonly blown off by a backfire. These include the one from the warm-up valve and the one from the idle-up valve for the aircon.

Check that the flap of the AFM has free movement throughout it's range- just disconnect the hose from the aircleaner and move the flap with your finger. A backfire slams it shut with explosive force and bends the post that it hinges on, causing it to stick and give false readings. If it sticks near the open position you get no idle and over-enrichment.

the extra air valve and AFM are functioning properly. so i guess its between the fuel pump, regulator and injectors now.
