Ball parking it off of the back burner stats and a napkin

depending on the state of tune of the engine and the year of it (the rangie had quite a few different power ratings and weights over the years)

rough guestimate is about 40HP/T for the really early models with the carbied 3.5 through to something like 55hp/t for the early injected models.

the injected 3.9 at a guess brings you in at the 60-65HP/T mark.

and thats loosely based on a new engine and the tare of the vehicle NOT the GVM.... If you want it at GVM take about 30% out of those numbers. (the base vehicle weight is about 2/3rds of the GVM)

Each state has their own laws. I think QLD have a power to weight ratio? But the OP was from Rochester.

What it boils down to, is that my youngest brother cannot drive my dads clapped out 88 model - cause it's got to much power...... yet a new commodore SV6, or a Camry V6 are fine.

My youngest son gets an occasional driving lesson in my 3.9 V8 RRC.

But after he gets his licence, it's deemed tooooo powerful for him in certain eastern states.

But he's fine to take out Mum's Magna, and break the speed limit in half the time/distance.

Such logic, no wonder the Law and its upholders are regarded as asses...

I assume your going through the Bendigo vicroads office? They don't know anything there, and told me to ring a number in Melbourne. So I rung the number and they said to provide the Bendigo office with 'evidence'. So off I trot to the Bendigo office, and they have no clue as to what 'evidence' is needed, nor the process to go about it.

I then sent of a letter to the excemptions office in Melbourne with the power to weight ratio, and that it would cause my dad financial difficulty to get another vehicle. 6 months later I get a reply saying that I need to provide them with more 'evidence' but fail to state what that evidence is.

My wife is about to get her p plates soon, so I will be getting REALLY!!!! angry with them this time!

So true about the Magna, and for that fact a Peugot 206 HDI, which will do 0-100 just as quick as a falcon XR8 - 5.3seconds.

    Good luck

    Aaaah . . . public servants . . . aren't they cute . . . like muppets!

I find that because they don't know what they want, and don't know how to find out what they want, it's best to give them far more information than they need. That way, they can then make a decision as if they actually know what they're talking about, which makes them feel better.

I would make a long list of every powerful car that can be driven on P-plates, with a list of the power-to-weight ratios as well as published 0-100kmh times, and then the same figures for your car. Get some contact details so that you can ring and email them every day or so. (They'll get tired of their tea breaks being interrupted.)

Also do a short write-up of no more than one page and send it to your local member. They may not do anything, but it can't hurt and they should know what these sorts of laws do to people.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

Yeah I thought they might be like that, but ill just have to wait and see what they give me back. If its just stupid ill have to go a bit deeper. Seeing as they are allowing me to drive a car with twice the power and 0-100 times.

Did you go through the Bendigo office at all? I'm about to head up there after work today, maybe if there's a few people haggling them at once, they might get their act into gear.

    check your insurance as well.

Here in Tasmania the issue with P plater is more to do with the Insurance company's not wanting to have anything to do with youngsters in V8's.
