3.9 EFI D1 motor into my 86 Rangie

So, as the thread title suggests, I am about to undertake a transplant in my 86. It is the last of the carby versions, and is the engine is needing some work, so I now have the opportunity to repower it with a decent D1 EFI engine and Auto. Mine currently runs the LT77 manual, which will also be replaced.

So, for those that are in the know, or have done this conversion, what do I need to get off the donor vehicle to do this?

The donor vehicle is complete and running, so I have first dibs on anything I need to make this work. So far on the shopping list are - Engine, auto, radiator, wiring loom, ecu, all the ancillaries (alt, PS, ac - mine is vee belt, new one is serpentine belt) fuel lines, fuel tank - if this is a straight swap.

Is the wiring loom easy enough to remove or it it part of the main wiring harness? I have no dramas making a new loom from scratch, and I am thinking of doing this so a I can keep it completely seperate from the other wiring (that is also heavily modified) - de Lucased? - Is that a word???

Is there anything I need to look out for, or anything I should be grabbing that I haven't thought of? If the fuel tank is not a straight swap, I am happy to run a return line to mine, and fit an EFI pump in the supply line.

I'm not anticipating too many dramas with this - from what I have read, this is a pretty straight forward conversion.

Are there any roadworthy or engineering issues to overcome doing this? The car will be off the road for a while once I start this, and I will need to get a RWC when I am all done, as I will be transferring it to club reg when this is done.

Any info, experiences, or insights into this would be greatly appreciated. The more I know to start with, the less I'll be hassling you all while I'm doing the conversion.

I'm going to start a thread in the 'Members Rides' section soon, I have already done a bit to the old girl, and I want to record what I do from now on.

    Cheers - Gav

    Gav,

I did a thread when I swapped mine from 3.5 flapper to 3.9 14CUX. Much will be similar.

club dependant, in victoria you can get club rego on anything thats 25yo and over.

great scheme for the weekender rangies, as club rego is $100ish as opposed to $540+. and you can get a choice of 45 days or 90 days.

Club rego in SA means 100% unmodified, IE no EFI upgrade. Check with your club's checking officer first.

As Mrmoparman said, after 25 years old, it can be put on club reg.

Thanks mate - I did a quick search before I posted this thread and didn't see that - I'll do some more searching and see what I can fine.

would you not be better off swapping the 86 RR body onto the Disco chassis?

No. With the room I (don't) have, and that changing an engine and box is quite easy it is not something I would consider. Also, the price of the engine and gearbox is about all the money I really want to spend on it at the moment, paying for the whole lot (as parts - he is parting the whole vehicle out) would be more than I could afford.
