    RRC Bosch Birthday

    Hello All,

My names AJ another Englishman with soft spot for Land Rovers. Been here for 2 years working as an Automotive Engineer in Perth and finally I have an 83' Rangie which I purchased Monday. It came with a bit of fruit, ARB bull bar, ARB compressor, spoties and a roof rack which a custom canvas top which converts it into a roof top type swag situation. The previous owner had it for 20 years and to be fair its in reasonable condition. Im happy!

All week I have been dieing to start tinkering, in the past couple of lunch times I have managed to put a new angle drive into the speedo (its nice knowing how fast your traveling) and changed some of the gauges: voltage and the clock. A good jet wash of the engine bay this evening to remove the snail family ready for some new parts.

Sunday is the Bosch Birthday (Saturday is for Rugby) I have acquired new leads, plugs, coil, rotor, and disi cap. Along with all the lubricants to be changed, also new oil filter and fuel filter. Air filter yet to be purchased.

Now to the problems I have with her please help...

The passenger door behind the driver does not open?
The indicators work only when they want to, usually they dont?

Thats it at the moment I think!

    Cheers,

    AJ

    AJ,
Welcome, there are quite a few of us in WA and a lot of us in the Perth Area. I am in South Yunderup near Mandurah.
I had similar minor probs with my 84 Classic when I had that. The indicator problem I had was the indicator stalk not actually making contact with the contacts. Cannot remember how I fixed it but I did manage to make them work without buying new.
Door handles are a common problem. They break just inside the door handle itself and or the rods come unhooked or the plastic pieces break the rods sit in. Easy fix but you have to get the internal trim off and this may be difficult if you cannot open either from the outside or inside, though not impossible. I took the back seat out so I could get to.
    Cheers

Welcome to the forum. That sounds great. How much did you pay for it? Mine's an '83 but it certainly didn't have some of those nice extras. It's a good time to buy an old Range Rover. They're cheap and parts are still mostly available.

I've heard that you can clean those sorts of switches with contact cleaner, but a big one with these cars is the earthing. You have to check all the earths and maybe add a few more.

One of the doors on mine didn't open from the inside, and it was only the child-proof lock, which I discovered before I took it all apart, (for a change).

Having a problem with the firing order?

The firing order of the plugs removed is not the same as what the manual says.

Obviously I didn't record what it was but im 90% sure that its not the standard firing order?

    Any ideas?

Have you got the appropriate RAVE manual ?

    If not, you need one...

-Visit the 'SHOP' in the top green bar on this page...

What area of Perth are you in ?

You have my sympathies, RangeRoveritis is an incurable idiopathic syndrome. Prognosis is never good...

I do have the RAVE manual and the haynes and an original Rover workshop manual still I had to call on the old head which is my father back in the UK.

All sorted now. The firing order was incorrect, she sounds better than ever.

Next up is a new indicator stalk.... the old one has cracked in half. Painting of the bull bar and maybe turning it into an air tank. Also sorting the mess in which the wiring is!

Looking forward to going on a trip hopefully during Easter break!

I know people have done this, but don't. It's not meant to be a pressure vessel, and it's just too dangerous. When things like that let go, they don't give any warning.

So took the Rangie out on Saturday for its first trip off road and on the beach. In short it was less than successful.

I managed to totally shred a Tyre (BF Goodrich AT) think they were a bit old and brittle. Changing the tyre on the beach led to the Rangie slipping of a buried log and squashing my arm between the arch and the tyre. No breakage but a lesson learnt thats for sure.

Following this I learnt that I dont have low range? So I had to drive along the beach in high range.

Once we made it to where we were camping everything was ok until the morning.

Leaving the beach I managed to get it stuck in 2nd, while the gearstick flops about. Once getting pulled off the beach, my friend towed the car with my foot on the clutch. Until some awful noises occurred and the clutch disappeared. In the end I had to join the RAC to get towed home. 8 hours it took to get home. I live about 50 mins away!

    Eventful, that's for sure.

Not sure where to start. Any ideas?

Man that is an unlucky event.
Got my sympathies mate, I had to abandon mine on Sunday night in water at 3am .... It was my birthday too!
So I know how you feel!
With the indicator stalk where is it cracked?
If its the plastic you can bond it together after spraying loads of electrical cleaner in it. Fixed mine?

Keep ya chin up, RRC is a wicked vehicle once you sort it :
