Exessive oil comsumption in a 4.6

    Hey all,

Well, a mate of mine has just bought a Range rover classic (he was very happy) but after driving it around he has noticed it has a very high oil consumption. for example he reckons 1-1.5 litres per 600 km. He reckons it only started when one day he gave it too many beans when it was cold and for about 10 minutes after it blow alot of smoke. From that point on it has been using oil. I've checked the spark plugs, and there's no wet oil to be seen, just the usual wear.

So... to me there's only 2 answers, value stems or rings. So next for him is to do a wet test. BUT I thought I'd ask all you first!

There other thing I was thinking is how do you go about cleaning the PCV breathers etc. I checked the manual, but theres not much to that. OR is that it. Clean flame trap, clean the little thing on top of the right side of the valve cover.

Any handy hints would be great?

    cheers nat
P.S theres no oil leaks! I knew one of your smart asses would say it!

Valve stem seals (which can suddenly fail/disintegrate) are best shown up by using engine braking down a longish hill, then planting the throttle at the bottom. If you get a big gout of smoke that clears quickly under full power its the valve stem seals. A broken compression ring (or two or more) will on the other hand smoke more the faster you push it.
