    dizzie springs

    Hi guys,

I just whipped the dizzie cap off and button to have a look at them .... (yeah they need replacing but will be ok for now).... It drove 3meters and stopped ... sigh. Rather than the rotor button simply pulling off... It's lifted up the dizzie shaft and pulled the centripetal springs off the weights. I've whipped it apart, the springs would be a piece of cake to simple clip back on ......... Only the shaft with the toothed chopper on it doesn't pass through the bottom plate in the dizzie ... so you can't actually get to the springs to put them back on.

I managed to get the circlip off the top of the chopper wheel, however it appears I need to use force somewhere to separate it. Does anyone have an exploded diagram of how the chopper wheel removes from the dizzie shaft

Oh well I guess it gives me a chance to grease everything up.

    seeya,
    Shane L.

Perfect, thanks!! So I can just pry the toothed gear off. I'll probably do your 'mod when order in a new cap and rotor.

Talk about bloody frustrating... the things stuck out in the paddock where it's dark now. What a crazy design. I can't see how to avoid pulling the springs off each time you remove the rotor as the parts you need to hold while you pull on the rotor are hidden below the base plate in the dizzie.

No, you hold down the star rotor with another screwdriver while you wriggle the rotor button off. And that's only if your rotor is stuck to the shaft with rust from forgetting to do this more often! If you're lifting off the star rotor the springs have probably already fallen off or you're doing preventative surgery before the nylon clip breaks.

I'll have too take a look when it's back together. Maybe you need to remove the plastic cover to hold part the rotor is so firmly clamped too. This ones not rusty, it's just a really tight fit.

OK, so my mechanic told me that my advance was not working at higher RPM and that the dizzy needs an overhaul. I've just had a look at Bea utys step by step guide and added a step of my of my own... BACKWARDS! I'm not keen to do this job myself. Are there re-coned units available, what are my best options?

There a pretty simple dizzie .... you might just have one spring off. I can't see how a vacuum advance it rev dependent. It's the centripetal weights in the dizzie that impact timing and revs. It may just have one spring off from someone pulling the rotor button off.

This is a well-known problem with these dizzys. I put a little bit of grease on the rotor when I put it on. And you have to be very careful when you pull the rotor off later on, as you've found out. I seem to remember that there's not much room to put a screwdriver in to hold it down when you pull the rotor off? I shall have to check.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

Yeah I've got it back together, and there is room to get a screwdriver down onto the toothed gear .... ****IF*** you are already aware of the issue.

the only problem I have now is it doesn't run ... not a cracker, not even a backfire.... If I had at least a backfire I'd know there was spark. So no doubt I've upset the pickup. Dunno how (damn it all).

I did check everything as I re-assembled it. I found the vacuum advance held an amazing amount of vacuum............... without moving the timing at all .... hhmmm... So I pulled the one way valve out of the line and tried sucking on it again ........... urrrgggghhhh ... delightful, and mouthful of petrol 'Cos the valve is in the wrong way around, stuff... like air and petrol can flow down into the vacuum capsule, but not be sucked back out.

Oh well I won't have time to see why it won't run now for a couple of weeks All this just 'cos I pulled a rotor button off ... sigh.,... I imagine it'll run better with the vacuum advance working though
