I have read similar comments about the Classics and always thought it unusual. Mine and others I have looked at have no rust in their tailgates or anywhere else for that matter. It might be because we live inland - N/E Vic and Southern NSW - and well away from salt air.

Rust in the tailgate is from water sitting in the lower steel channel. If you seal the glass against the frame with silicone it stops water getting in and stops the rust.

I sealed mine up ~10 years ago and have had no rust creep since. It suffered a very small amount prior but has no external rust holes and is in far better condition than the gate on my 93.

It is possible to halt the rust on them too. You can pull the frame apart and treat it. I had a few bubbles showing through 7 years ago, and it hasn't got any worse.

I pour rust-killer in from the top until it oozes out the bottom. It always oozes out through the rust patches, then seal it up from the top and job done.

Like I said, I'm not planning on going crazy with it, I've got the D2 if I want to go doing tough tracks, so it will probably spend a fair whack of time chasing kangaroos on my girlfriends property.

Now the question: Do I re-spray it in the original green and call it Kermit (Apt, no?) or do I go for that red colour I always wanted....
    Cheers guys.

Starting to look like saying no to this classic is impossible, SWMBO not only gave me the green light but also says I should be able to store it on her property
Time to study up on 3.5 V8s methinks...

The '89 Classic I used to drive for work was a 3.5 running LPG. Previous owner had it re-built with a 'towing' cam, and it was pretty darn quick 0 - 70km/h, and no slouch with 2+ tonnes behind it. - But died at 90

My own 3.9 / '95 Classic with low kms is a slug with a loaded garden trailer and nothing flash unloaded. Cert Even with the son driving it....

Based on this and other comments here.... the 3.5 has potential for improvement. IMHO, the extra 419cc with all it's fragility (overheating) makes the 3.9 too 'iffy' for a farm hack.

    Paint it RED.....

I think the thermostat might be worth a squizzy, I've got one with the right amount of holes to prevent overheating ;-)

Seeing as you're not going crazy, there's a wonderful range of pressure pack reds out there, or perhaps considering the Pro Hart or Jackson Pollock approach?

My tongue is firmly planted in my cheek, or should I bite it while it's not flapping?

    Anyway.
Given that it's not looking like going anywhere in a hurry, D2 needs to get sorted first...
