    Finishing someone else's unfinished project.

1985 Range Rover, the person whom I bought it off is not the person who did any of this work.

I've tried to find information about running a ZF auto with a Edelbrock 1404 carb but with no luck, the only info I have found so far is with a Ford or GM transmission. Edelbrock only sell Ford/GM/Chrysler transmission kickdown brackets. I have searched the tech section and RRC section but as all of this auto/carb/kickdown/homemade linkages is new to me I can't quite work it all out!

I kind of understand what the kickdown is and what it does but because the motor has a homemade linkages bracket bolted to it and had nothing attached when I first opened the bonnet, I guess I'm stumped.

As far as I can tell the original 1985 3.5/727/LT230 was replaced with a May 1988 stamped auto EFI Discovery motor along with the ZF 4HP22 and LT230, as the LT230 in it now is a 28D which is 1986 onwards as far as I can tell. Then it had the Edelbrock manifold and 1404 carb put on it. There is no shifter assembly either.

So basically, any help with sorting out the kickdown linkage, any emission system things I should address and advice with what I should do about replacing the missing shifter (do I need to modify a ZF one to fit the `85 floor), would be greatly appreciated. I also need to replace the broken choke cable and then work out how to attach that too. There is also a handful of wires going to nowhere. Oh and no handbrake whatsoever, will a later model one work, modified to fit the `85 floor?

Obviously I can/will take photos if requested!

Hee hee, that's some project. But you'll love it when you're done, and it's all done the way you want it.

For the handbrake, you may be able to use a later handle and cable, which should be easier than trying to get the earlier mechanical assembly to fit.

Ashcroft Transmissions may be worth asking for kickdown specs. I think you only need to move one lever a certain amount. And a workshop manual should have information on adjusting it, which may help. I know on my 727 I had to fix all that up when I first got it, (which is one reason I'm changing it to a manual!) I'm not familiar enough with the EFI and ZF systems, but since it uses a throttle cable there should be something there you can use as reference.

And you should be able to use a ZF shifter since, at least, it should work!

That's all very vague, but I hope it gives you something to think about.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

If they fitted the ZF and tfr then they would have needed to modify the floor and so the cable handbrake lever will bolt down where it belongs. Find a late RRC examplt to see where it should go.

    Finishing someone else's unfinished project

    HI Chivalry,

Don't know if this will help.

I have an 81 RRC 3.5 with std twin CD175 carbies 3 speed Borg Warner (Factory fitted) auto.

Kickdown for auto has a simple bracket for auto mounted on the rocker cover and the cable attaches to linkages for the std twin CD175 carbies at rear.

I've enclosed photo ....took it tonight....unfortunately the aircleaner does get in the way (not simple to remove) but you get the general idea.

    Cheers

    Baggy

i am happy to find someone with an Edelbrock setup. Any chance of a couple of pics please? Specifically looking at the linkages. Ive just ordered new choke and accelerator cables along with a bracket. I have an 84 and have just installed the edelbrock manifold and carby, however not fully complete as i have played with other gremlins in the engine bay.
ditched my York a/c for a Sanden out of an 86 parts donor(garden ornament) so now the compressor is down low on the opposite side and alternator has switched with the old York.
so some picks would be awesome.
i have been a longtime victim of the time suck that is Aulro, being amused, confused and educated. However a little reluctant to post, however will post pics as soon as i learn how.
    good luck and cheers

The later transfers can take the original 85 hand-brake brackets. If the OP still has them. Then it's just the gear lever that's the problem.

I'd be tempted to make EFI work instead of a carb setup.
No actually, I'd be tempted to throw a diesel in instead.

Shifter can be made to fit without too many issues - I've just done this on mine and it works fine. I posted a couple of pics up in another thread - I'll see if I can dig them up.

Edit - Here we go - not pretty due to the cover plate that needed to be fitted where the original manual stick came through, and all the Sikaflex but it is full sealed, shifter is mounted nicely and in a good location. The factory console will not fit this though, so a custom one will get built at some stage.

ahh the cost of petrol in kiwiland. Totally understand the move towards diesels!
However Chivalry has a setup i'm keen on seeing going!
And whilst diesels are great... That V8 is sweet and nostalgic!
lol i have read your pasts on a few other forums when i threw away a different petrol V8 and was heading down that road.
respect! you certainly know that 4BD1T!
However economic considerations are different everywhere. I cry for what i pay for freight, on everything! Most peoples solutions to problems are cheaper than my freight bills!
As i get older i just like to solve the problem!
So go that Edelbrock mate! And post me those pics!

    Please!

I'm now stuck at the loom coming from the ZF. I've got enough parts together so that I can see if it will start, however I'm not getting power to the starter solenoid through the ignition because the ignition switch wire is in the loom that goes to the ZF's inhibitor switch. I cannot find which relay would be the factory starter relay so figure I should just bypass it. How could I wire the starter to the ignition switch? I understand that I would still need a relay between solenoid and ignition switch.

Is there a way for me to wire the ZF into the factory `85 loom? Would the car start and run without needing the ZF wired up? For now I only need to start and run the motor and not move it or put it in any gears, is that doable without the inhibitor if starting it in neutral?

    Pictures:

Starter wire is brown with red stripes (top), others go to the inhibitor switch.

Loom from previous picture is marked with red, inhibitor switch loom marked with green.

    Ignition switch.

Skon, I have a RRC 82 with Windsor 302 with some sort of Edelbrock gear on it (intake manifold), Ford(?) auto with Marks Adaptor to the LT230 if its of any help to look at - but its an LPG conversion. Bought it by 'mistake'. Humpty Doo. Yes, freight is a killer - Auckland is closer to Sydney and Brisbane than we are!
