    Odd problem

My 89 RRC 3.5inj has developed a strange problem

I noticed the other week the fuel gauge is very slow to move and that the fuel light will come when it feels like it, the other morn put 30L in it drove 3ks and it went to 3/4 then to 1/2 then to 1/3 (fuel light came on) then to 1/4 (fuel light off) then back to 2/3

Also when the gauge doesn't work and the car is warm and you stop at lights or where eva and idle the car runs rough revs sit on zero and alt light glows slightly, but you have to rev it to like 1800rpm to clear the rough running and get rid of the alt light, BUT next time you stop it runs fine (sometimes)

I thought all this was caused by my very dodgy starter and plugs but they all got change over the weekend and still gauge takes for eva to move, but all other gauges fuction as normal

All this only started a couple of weeks ago but on the weekend I thought the alt could be the problem but its charging @ 14.2V

    I'm lost

Have you measured the output of the alternator when the tacho is dead and the red light is on?

My guess is your alternator is on its last legs. Could be just the brushes, or something more serious.

First job is to check all the earths, battery connections, and alternator connections. Your symptoms will be due to a voltage drop.

Fuel gauge problems on these are often deteriorating fuel level senders. Float perished/gone soggy or the track is worn. Needs another sender. Have you been using E10 recently?

Ok I've not used E10 for 12 months as last time I used it the car ran like crap

I will have to wait to till I'm a little lower on fuel and rip out the sender

E10 has been used exclusively in my RRC for about 8 years and I've never had issues, and the fuel gauge still works fine.

I'd hazard a guess that E10 in a sealed fuel tank is fine, but many older vehicles have damaged breathers allowing moisture in. E10 is probably worse than regular petrol at attracting moisture.

Just checked the alt today with rev counter on 0 and red light on it was still charging at 12v and rev the engine and clear the rough idle it charges at 13.8v so guessing with the engine warm the fuel mix goes through the roof so some more turning
