The most important thing that a vacuum advance capsule does is hold the timing in the correct position, regardless of the advance working or not. The arm of the advance capsule MUST be engaged with the pin under the pickup plate. It's not really that hard to take off the cap, remove the plastic cover and manipulate the pickup to engage the arm of the vac unit. You can also see how long any replacement screw needs to be, even if you can fit a small nut and bolt set.

Oh and make sure you don't wrench off the rotor button, wriggle it off gently and if necessary hold down the star rotor with a small screwdriver.

If you really think you need it , here is a new one.

second hand will be just as old as yours and a complete dissy SH may also have a stuffed vac unit.AS bee utey said just make sure the points / pickup plate doesn't move and check if the rotor can spring forward in direction and then spring back to rest this is the mechanical advance. they nearly never get lubed in service and can stick solid.

Ok some it ran fine on gas but didn't run at all on fuel so I put in refurbed injectors and cleaned the fuel rail ect. Started it up and it was good idled and sounded good but I thought it sounded a bit advanced. So when I checked the dizzy I broke the vacuum advance off. I tried it after that without blocking the hole in pelenium and it was rough and wouldn't idle. I haven't tried starting it while blocking the hole.

Ok so I remounted the vacuum advance and to remount the arm I had to take off the plastic cover and rotor when I pulled the rotor it felt like it pulled the centre out further then normal as once I put it all back together the cap wouldn't sit properly. What do I do ??

You pulled too hard on the rotor button, you then have to Fix It.
