Hi all,
After ongoing issues with my speedometer and deteriorating instrument cluster, I have managed to source a newer model (93) RRC instrument cluster thanks to a fellow member
Now, my 'project' car is a 1984 RRC with 5 speed manual gearbox. I believe it may be a LT77?
The new instrument cluster is in great condition, however it has an electronic speedo, whilst my 84 has the cable driven speedo with angle drive.
From what I can remember, it had some sort of bracket holding the speedo cable in the gearbox.
Can anyone offer any further information on converting the speedo cable to a transducer and wire?
I have managed to find some links to similar projects on other Land Rovers, namely TD5s, but I am not sure how relevant the information will be to my cause.

Next, will there be any other major differences between the 84 and 93 cluster? ie different temp gauges?
I'll get some photos up this week of the new and old clusters.
Cheers,
Jeremy
I will be doing this same swap at some stage. But right now I have the complete working 85 vehicle and complete working 93 vehicle. The 93 use a short speedo cable into the same location on the transfer. The transducer is somewhere in the other end of that.
Ok have finally got access to the LR parts catalog, the site seemed to be down yesterday...

Now, I'm guessing the cable is usually part of the gearbox loom?
The sensor plug is a 2-pin, however as seen from the yellow plug on the instrument cluster, the speedo end is a 6-pin.
My version of RAVE is not very helpful as it seems to skip 93 and go straight from 87 to 95 with its instrument cluster diagrams.
I need to work out how I can connect this sensor to my dash...
Found this, but it only has a plug on the sensor end. I guess I have to figure the rest out.

Will need to work this one out to determine which pin on the cluster plug that the signal wire comes back to.

*********, if you have the 93 cluster and loom handy, would you mind taking a quick pic that I could use as a reference?
I wonder how similar it is to the defender:
Land Rover Addict Forums
I have attached the defender diagrams taken from the above source (as they were troublesome to open on some platforms)
It is still only 1 signal wire from the sensor to the cluster. I just need to establish which wires I need to power and earth the cluster etc.

Also, for reference, I found the diagram for the cable>sensor setup.
The transducer for this setup is part #AMR3386
It seems like this was a temporary solution for LR before they moved over to sensors completely.
I don't really understand the logic behind having the short section of cable before the sensor - it's just one more thing to go wrong/break, right?

Comparison between 84 and 93 RRC instrument cluster attached. (Seems attachment photos are better because the Tapatalk uploaded ones are tiny when viewed on a PC)
It's good to see that the main harness is the same, and the speedo is just it's own plug.
I was hoping the photo could be used as a reference to the pinout on the cluster - to point out which pins on the cluster that the transducer wire connects with.
The next part of my research is to source a plug for the speedo at the back of the cluster, so that the retrofit is as neat as possible.
