    Good work Mercguy.
All I can tell you about my version is that when you un-clip the 2nd bonnet lock, the bonnet rises about 6 inches of its own accord, and then a very gentle nudge will send it up to its open limits ie its almost spot on.

Having said that and at the risk of hijacking my own info, I have a pair of hard to read UES Part No 41130 TYP16-4 016 11889A 600N 09/08 bonnet struts given to me supposedly ex a jeep, which I now suspect will be too strong if the 600N means what I think it does. If only I could read the website, but will follow trough on a UES search.
    Cheers Gavin

Above are some of the pics (couple more to come) of the strut from the cosworth.

the strut has a metal eye attachment on the rod end. This attaches to the bonnet with a small high tensile bolt which has a small ferrule in it, which allows the strut to pivot freely.

The damper housing sits inside a plastic tube, which effectively is the 'base' for the strut, and is held in with a clip. This is to allow extension over the free length of the damper, and allows for vertical locking of the bonnet (with the retaining pivot on the mercedes bonnet hinge)
The base of the tube in this application, has the plastic ball socket built in, and the damper tube end is blind.

I will post some more pics below.

The basic dimensions required are reasonably simple. free length and compressed length and the attachment type on each end.

The damper stroke can be worked out, unless you have a specific requirement.
I've attached some (not all) of the damper options available based on the existing provided dimensions, but there are a bunch more pages. No sense in uploading screenshots of everything when you can use the stabilus website to find out a more specific damper for your own requirements.
