Thread: Need help to buy or not to buy

A few observations.

- all thee vehicles are over 25 years old, so even the higher dollar examples, although they may have some good points, will almost certainly still have some issues like leaking swivel or hub seals etc.

- rebuilding a 3.9 properly with top hat liners, etc will cost you more than $5,000.

- the 3.5 unit actually has the best engine, although it is by far the least powerful.

- if yours is as rough as you say, getting something else that is nice, relatively free of issues and putting your good bits in it sounds like a good idea to me if your not attached sentimentally to the old one.

Thanks I have an attachment haha but was going to keep her for spares anyway. I'm more seeing if spending the money on another unknown car is better then spending it on the old girl. As if I spent 4000 on mine I could probably get her running nice but interior would need work. It's not rough just needs a good tidy up and fix broken bits. Needs new suspension also. Where as buying another as it is unknown would get me a base car that isn't molested and seen basic off-roading. Then adding my stuff that's good. It's a hard decision. Hahaha

Decided to get the old girl. However have to spend some time on it. It's my work truck. It has oil leaks engine, transfer and rear diff seals and pinion.

It's developed a ticking noise which I quietened a little by patching exhaust. My main issue is when driving out of nowhere it make a bang noise like a rock has banged up under the car. Feels like the rear diff but my hand brake and transfer is leaking more than usual.

I know it's some work but any idea on any issues mentioned or places to go. Would be a great help.

Does it have the borg warner transfer? It sounds like your jumping a tooth on the chain.

Nah it's a lt230 on a r380.

My initial thoughts are the handbrake shoes catching somewhere or broken.

Centre diff lock is still engaged?
