Thread: RRC tailgate

I have a couple of questions. Does anybody have reasonable rubbers spare for the bottom of the tailgate as in attached pictures? I mean the ones that are around the hinges and the one that runs all the way across.
Also the glass in my top tailgate is loose in the frame. How easy is it to split the frame so I can reseal the glass?

As rrturboD said but be prepared for just as much difficulty in separating the lower frame which is nearly always rusted together with the steel right angle brackets that brace the lower frame to the side framing. Some of the screws are under the latches and screw into the right angle brackets.

I rebuilt my upper tailgate which required replacing the lower frame section. It was a pig to get apart from the rest of the framing (did it twice to get the replacement from a wrecked one) - it took cutting all the way along the sealant between the glass and the lower frame with a razor blade (both sides of the glass) and much careful persistent knocking with a wooden mallet and square ended punch to get them to separate. Lots of rust to clean out of the corners.

A further hassle was the steel track in which the rubber seal is mounted - this is riveted to the bottom frame and also rusts through here and there. I had to retap the threads in the right angle brackets to clean them up to refit the screws. Much fiddling to clean out the old sealant. Maybe yours will give more easily since the glass is loose but probs has let in a lot of water. With luck the countersunk screws will clean up ok - would be hard to replace.

Sorry to go on but this is a very frustrating and time consuming job.

I've never seen the bottom rubber seal for the lower tailgate, though can't say I've searched the earth for one. The rubber for the whole rear aperture is available and the bottom seal for the upper tailgate pops up occasionally on eBay.
