Back in a jiffy......I'm off to grab some popcorn!![]()
I'm going to start a forest fire with this one methinks....
Staunch feelings in both camps I would entertain, so let's just cut to the chase.
Which one is better?
Which one would you prefer to have in your driveway?
How many modifications have you NEEDED to do to it to make it fit for your use purpose?
What is that purpose(s) exactly?
e.g. touring, towing (caravan, trailer, camper, bikes, jetski, boat), rockcrawling, mudbogging, bush-bashing(making your own trails), Beach work / fishing, family transport (weekend school sports incl.) getaway (weekend camping, not long term - see touring) daily driver with no off-road use (had to)

'El Burro' 2012 Defender 90.
I'll vote for both of the above.
The Clasic is the daily driver and the Defender is our get away rig![]()
Having owned both, I'll take a Rangie. Aircon that works, heating that works, a radio that can be heard, it doesn't leak as much, etc. And a V8.

RIP Bucko - Riding on Forever
I'd want to rock up at the opera in a mint classic, rather than a defender.
With the exception of clearance, I think in terms of raw off road ability they're pretty similar, if we're comparing a defender of the rrc era, thus ruling out traction control.
I think the classic represents better value for money if you're looking to make an off road vehicle, and a nicely kitted out classic looks absolutely spot on. Although so does a Defender.
I'd probably pick the classic, the fold down tail gate is pure class

I'm struggling to work out whether the Defender has any advantage over the RRC.
except for rear cargo.
So far everything mentioned before is absolutely true of both vehicles. Without being biased, I did make a conscious decision to purchase the RRC over the Defender. It was however at the sole consideration for SWMBO passenger comfort.
Not sure that I regret the decision, but as I embark on the mechanical modification adventure, I'm starting to wonder if I will be ruining the RRC.
Any of the modifications I'm performing would be seen as 'mandatory offroad requirements' for defender owners... lockers axles, lifts etc etc.
The LT230 swap is straightforward. No worries there.
My main concern is whether all the modifications will detract from the vehicle, or whether my more 'serious' outings would be better served in something less refined.
basically I don't want to ruin all the nice things about the RRC. But I want those lockers, 33's articulation and the interior comforts.
asking too much?

Relative pricing new side by side back when?
That's a lot of red wine
Now walk away quietly
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
