And the fuel consumption is worse than a 3.9 with leaky injectors.

I know 3 guys who bought them. Only one has kept it. His wife drives it on the school run, and he's looking to get rid of it in the next 6 months.

to keep the swap LR-centric, I would do the isuzu turbo, but boy are they a noisy bucket of bolts.

There are other more efficient, more modern diesels - but - the most logical question to ask is this: "If it breaks down hundreds of k's away from civilisation, how are you going to get it fixed?"

That question could be a matter of survival. This is why so many people still choose older engines and prefer mechanical IP's to the 'new fandangled electronic ones' - for fear the electric stuff might break. To some extent, there is a degree of truth in this, but the reality is they are every bit as reliable as each other. Problem is, electrical stuff scares a lot of people. because you can't see the electrons flowing in the wires... and you can't fix broken electronic modules covered in plastic and conformal.... but you can see mechanical stuff moving, or not moving - and you 'might' be able to fix it with clumsy fingers and a couple of large rocks......

There are many many swap options that have been documented. All one needs to do is to decide on which path to take.... petrol or diesel, normally aspirated or forced induction.
After that, it's just time and money..... Lots of money.
Dunno about the breaking down bit. If it's been reliable for an extended period of time with no warning signs... I don't think you can ask for more than that. Any modern car that breaks down in the middle of nowhere is likely dead. Let say you have a V8 turbo diesel cruiser and it dies 300km out of alice springs on a back track .... Do you think you are going to get it repaired.... Say you manage to get it towed into alice springs. Do you think they'll have thousands of $$$ worth of high pressure injectors and pumps in stock ( in your dreams ).

These days, if your broken down in modern stuff ..... You are STUFFED until parts can be specially ordered in (that is if anyone can actually figure out what is wrong). Parts may even need to come from Japan for a toyota ( might need to come from britain for your land rover on the other side of the coin).

One reason the Isuzus are very popular for those who enjoy the middle of nowhere is that they don't need any battery input to run.

If one knows how to start them without the starter you are still mobile in the event of a major (electrical) system failure.

Do they need glow plugs to start ? I'm guessing you throw a sniff of lpg from your cooker/fridge into the intake tract before giving it a good shove down a hill Is there a fuel cuttoff solenoid you need to power ... or are you just pulling the plunger from that so it has no effect ...

No glow pugs needed ever, wire the fuel cut off on, give it a push and away you go.

The more you modify the more you have to customise and the more knock on type mods needed.

It depends what's a priority for you in terms of cost, remote reliability, fuel range, city/hw driving, auto/manual.

For simplicity, cost, range & fuel economy & remote reliability I would drop in a 4BD1T and a LT95A.

For simplicity, cost, remote reliability city/hw driving and auto I would use your good auto box and refresh the motor & electrics.

4bd1, I'd play more tuning though and pump mods, which when I get my dyno I'll be able too. They are a great engine

Although an LSA in anything is cool

If you want 14l/100kms and drive able the Isuzu wins, if you want 25l/100kms and then some, but big smiles, stick an ls in

I wouldn't be fitting a stock ls1 in though, very lacklustre sub 3000rpm, need a cam and tune to suit
