Agree Usually a wet sensor. Easy to replace, even though "wet" on mine no fluid came out when I changed it, and yes there was ATF .
To be clear wet as with water on the contacts and "wet" as in exposed to fluid.

I have a 1985 RRC with the A727 auto. The light you are referring to is the auto transmission over temperature light. The switch is located just behind the front grill on the passenger side of the vehicle, it is in one of the transmission cooler lines.

Is the car an 1986 model or 1985? Fuel injected or carby?
According to the workshop manuals, the EFI light appeared on the 1987 model and is in the right hand column and is labelled EFI. There is no check engine light.
Again, according to the manuals, there is no lone exclamation mark in the binnacle. I think we need a pic.

AFAIR there was never a check engine light on Australian 14CUX or 14CU .
That was only for the US market as was the diagnostic display under the seat.
