A lot of variables in that era, do you want a 2/4door carby or efi 4/5 spd or 3 /4 spd auto, there are a few late 80's going for around 2k so i would look at 86-88 models.

86 to 88 are the pick of them. You may find the 3.5 a bit gutless if on tow

Mine is an 84, but I have had it for so long and made so many mods, that I could not start again with a later model. I hope to keep it till I can't drive any more.

Later models don't have anything that I don't have or need.

I loved my 85 phase II, should have kept it and put my 4.4 in it and let the wife drive the disco.

Can't agree more, (I have 2) but I must say that the later 1980's EFI and better still the 3.9 are the cream of the OEM specification crop apart from the fully seam welded body frame.

However like many my daily driver phase II bears little resemblance to it's original spec after the 4.6 and ZF were put in.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Sorry for the late reply people, I didn't realise that the 2 door still ranged on into the 80's but if I'd have to be picky on what is required it will have to be a 4 door, 5 speed and preferably a EFI but a carby would be OK as I could do a little work on it, although being just the 2 of us a 2 door would be OK. How do they go on L.P.Gas.

The best vintage as far as spec and general performance goes, the 90-mid 92 Pre air suspension/abs brake Vogue spec are the pic. Comfortable, reliable and just a great all-round package I find win it for me. The only sour note is that they have the viscous coupling transfer case but that can be changed so it's not permanant. Some people like them, I don't like the idea of something locking up at it's own free-will (like I don't like Detroit lockers, I like to be in control not the device so to speak)

The late 80's are good models too (I Have an 88 currently) but the EFI system is a dog of a unit and has a mind of it's own but there's good pones and crap ones so if they run a bit on the rough side, I'd look elsewhere because you could be up for more than you bargained for. The pre EFI models (phase 2 84-85's) are popular due to the fact they are still carb fed models not EFI and are simple yet pretty decent.

Thanks Trav, we will be looking at a carby one for sure as I said I like to tinker as do most men (we wouldn't be guys if we didn't right) and especially when it comes to interiors, I'm really an interior man and can can do good stuff under the bonnet I'm OK but as for anything to do with safety "ei brakes etc" I don't touch it's done by a mechanic friend who is very trustworthy and I mean it when I say she's very good at her job one of the best car mechanics I've met.
