    Post 1983 Range Rover

    G'day,

A while back i posted a thread re: removing LPG from my 83 rangie. I have come up with a solution, to remove the twin stromberg carbys and inlet manifold in place of the Edelbrock Buick 215 Dual Plane inlet manifold and topped off with the Edelbrock 500cfm 4 barell Weber carby. Also will have new gas mixer installed too.

ok now i have a question about the 3 speed auto gearbox on my rangie.
i heard that there is a landy 4 speed auto box that is a good upgrage over the old 3 speed box.

what 4 speed auto gearbox + transfer case do i need to get?

i think the induction + gearbox upgrade should improve drivability, especially when i tow.

any of your thoughts and recomendations would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Chris.

Sorry, I couldn't follow what you have removed/fitted as far as carbs and LPG.

A ZF4HP22 auto and LT230 transfer case from a Disco I or classic rangie would probably be best. Make sure you get a V8 version - diesels Disco I versions have different bell housing etc.

P38 rangies had a slightly larger and stronger ZF4HP24EH, but these are electrically controlled and you would need a compushift to control it.

Disco II ZF4HP22E are also electric controlled, but same size/strength (as Disco I.

Extra clutches and some parts from 4HP24 can be used to upgrade a 4HP22.

AFAIK all ZF autos used in rangies have the BorgWarner viscous transfer case, and the P38 transfer has the front output shaft on the wrong side for your rangie. The LT230 transfer case is regarded as stronger than the BorgWarner.

Have at Ashcroft's website for more information.

thats not a bad idea as a 4 speed auto + transfer case installed by someone can cost me approx $3000 to $4000 then my induction upgrade + LPG add $2000 = 6k. im sure i can find awrecked disco for less than 6k ill do all the work my self if so.

    thanks.

at the moment im running the 3.5 v8 with its origional twin strombergs it is on lpg already with the older gas injection system the mixers are unadjustable.

i wanted to change the inlet manifold and put a weber 500 instead of the origional twin carbs.

When I had a v8 in my rangie, I fitted a webber 500 carbie. It was terrible off road and I ended up changing to a quadrajet from a holden v8 - lot cheaper and better off road.

Unless you want dual petrol and lpg, stick with lpg only and use a throttle body from an injected engine.

    hi bush65,

when you say Qudrajet, is that the old Rochester 4 barell made for the old GM's holden 308's?

because instead of getting a new edelbrock inlet manifold and new weber 500carby, i can get a 2nd hand 215 buick inlet manifold with a 4 barrell Rochester for around $350 + $100 shipping outa the States......!

    cheers,

    chris.
