Thread: Viscous Hub and Squeeky Belt Adjusters

Hiya All,

Got a 2 part question I'm hoping you can help with.

Could be a stupid question...but is there a trick to removing the viscous hub from a 3.9L? How do i lock it up to stop it spinning when I try to spin the big nut at the back of it? (and yes I know it's a left hand thread )

The car currently has dual thermo fans and i'm thinking of removing the viscous fan to see if it heats up - hoping to save some fuel money if i don't need to run the viscous.

And secondly - the adjuster pullies for all the accessory belts seem to be squeaking. If i spray some silicon spray or other lubricant into them, it stops for a little while, but always comes back (even took one off and soaked it in oil overnight...didn't help for long). Is it possible to replace the bearings, or do i need to get complete replacement items?

A sharp tap with a hammer on the spanner usually does it, or stuff a rag between the belt and pulley, and then give it a tap. Seeing your pulley is turning maybe your belts are too loose and that is the cause of the squealing. CRC

I wouldn't remove the viscous unless replacing with a pair of Falcon fans or similar. The aircon fans do not turn on until 100C or so if the aircon is not turned on.

To check the adjuster pulleys take them of and turn them freely. You will hear grumbling or squeaking. AFAIK they are not servicable. I tried with mine but no go in getting it apart, and anyway the bearing diameter seemed so small that no replacement would fit. Anything is possible with enoiugh time and equipment but the Maxidrive ones are good and the pulley is replaceable.

You can get Maxi drive ones from MR Automotive for about $85 each plus postage AFAIR.
