    Question Electrical related questions + others

    Howdy all.
    Finally got my air filters today after waiting 3 weeks for CAT to get them to Brisbane from Sydney .
    that completes all the mechanical maintenance I needed to do to the truck.

    Now I need to get around to installing the pile of electrical stuff I've bought.
    My question is:
    Where on earth, or rather, in a Perentie, do you put your extra fuses, relays and power hubs?

    I want to install an alarm, reverse camera, small fan for the driver, a power socket, radio and eventually a CB and spotlights. All these things need power and fuses, which I have, I just cannot figure out for the life of me where to put them.

    If I remove the large black piece under the dash is there any space under there? (though that would be a complete PITA to have to remove to change a fuse).

    Where have you guys installed that stuff.

    Also, how do you disconnect the speedo cable from the back of the speedometer? My heater fan was not working at all, after unscrewing the instrument binnacle I managed to get my hand in there enough to clean a small amount of the grounding terminal and now it works on high speed, I'd like to get in there to finish the job, but to do that I need to disconnect that cable.

    Battery box would be the obvious answer, unless you are doing a dual battery setup there will be plenty of room.

    Another option is to buy a center cubby box (much like the factory ones) and put a mulgo exbox underneath it and run a 100A feed to it with a fuse box in there.

    Cubby Boxes or you can get them off ebay

    Mulgo Exbox

    Also I recommend upgrading your glass fuses to modern blade fuses, as seen in this thread. This will give you a few spare fuses!

    Thanks Badco. I've picked up a new fusebox and plan on doing that upgrade in the next week. Just waiting on a box of fuses to arrive.

    Those cubby boxes are expensive enough aren't they? Certainly an option to look into.

    I was thinking about the battery box, but don't want to for two reasons. 1. eventually I'd like to run dual batteries and 2. It's not water tight. Mine was full of mud when I first got it , there are some rather large holes cut into it; I'll have to look to see if I can get grommets that large to seal it up a bit.

    There are other cubbys you can get, they are just an example. You could also make your own.

    Mine was full of dust! I wouldn't worry too much about the battery box being water tight, the battery has survived this long in every other defender. As long as there are drainage holes! But yeah find some bungs for the big pre cut holes.

    If you google images defender dual battery setup you would be surprised what else other people have managed to fit in there with dual optimas.

    you bought a vehicle thats so feature sparten it make most poverty pack owners feel proud to have such luxurious features and was built around the concept of a mechano set by guys whose attention to detail drives rivet counters nuts because no two were the same in the first place. They've had unapproved mods added and pulled out of them and approved mods installed by some of the lowest paid mechanics that draw breath on the planet and you want to know where you can install things?

    You can get waterproof fuse blocks, if not from Supercheap/Repco etc then from ship chandlers i'd imagine.

    or depending on where you run wiring and place switches, and where you want your fuses you could also use inline fuse holders

    i've just orded a basic cubby from the UK , 40 pounds. freight was a bit pricey because of the bulkiness but with some lighting upgrades in the order as well it makes the freight worthwhile and the whole lot was much cheaper than i could find here.

    I made a cubby from a small wall safe bolted to a piece of chequer-plate which was bolted in place of the gun rack base. Then added a vinyl and sponge top as an arm rest and cup holders in front. The whole lot cost about $120.
