Almost started a new thread, then remembered I had this electrical one going.

So I was poking around the heater box in the engine bay and found a rusted, very dodgily sealed box that looked like a voltage regulator just sitting loose in there

Can anyone confirm that this is a/the voltage regulator, and if so, give me a part number so I can get a new one?

    Thanks

Just had a quick look at mine. It appears to be attached to the fan, possibly a capacitor for the motor? Can you see where the wires go?

More likely to be a resistor block for the different fan speeds. They get hot at low fan speeds so fan cooling makes sense.

    fan speed resistor.

dont bother to replace it with another one, replace it with a 12v 5A pwm unit and put the controller up near the dash

It's a god awful mess in there and I'm short. I'll get the ladder out so I can poke my head under there and see If I can work out where its going.

I can see that there is black cable that runs from alternator to the starter motor that branches off to it, then there is some short cable that I think goes to the heater box.
    will report back!
