We had FTTN NBN go live 27th Sep. I had pre ordered with ABB and it took two weeks for a NBN tech to connect us so we've had it now for three weeks.
When first connected our speed was 33.96/13.29 Mbps, more than 10 times better than we had with ADSL but certainly not great.
I booked a licensed cabler to come and wire directly from the lead in to the modem (this is an imperative for anyone on FTTN that is more than 300 metres from the node to maximise speed an minimise dropouts). This took us to 70.16/24.74 Mbps.
We had a hiccough a week ago where the connection was going down every couple of minutes. We were put on stability profile (this slows your speed down but makes the connection more stable - funny that) for 24 hours at which point NBN had sorted it out. We are now syncing at 66.84/23.91 Mbps still nearly 24 times better than our ADSL Service and light years ahead in stability.
I am about 510 metres from the node and was hoping for 70+ Mbps.... was expecting to get close to 100Mbps until NBN decided to add in an extra 260 metres of copper by situating the node further away at the next pillar.
I am reasonably happy with what we have, I could probably extricate another 2-4Mbps out of it by getting a modem with the broadcom chipset though, it's not really a concern at this point. Only problem is we are stuck with this tech for the next 20 years with no upgrade path short of paying for technology choice and the associated potential impact on house pricing that carries - that's a 'later' problem.
For now, happy family. No more arguments over who is hogging bandwidth.![]()
